Job Description: Mechanical Fitter – Mid Level

Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Fitter to install, assemble, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical equipment and machinery. The successful candidate will work from technical drawings, follow maintenance procedures, and ensure equipment is operating safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, assemble, align, and dismantle mechanical equipment and machinery.
• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on pumps, motors, gearboxes, bearings, valves, conveyors, and other mechanical components.
• Diagnose mechanical faults and carry out repairs or component replacements.
• Read and interpret technical drawings, equipment manuals, and maintenance instructions.
• Use hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, and workshop equipment safely.
• Conduct equipment alignment, shaft alignment, levelling, and fitting activities.
• Inspect mechanical parts for wear, damage, or defects.
• Replace bearings, seals, gaskets, couplings, belts, and other mechanical components.
• Support equipment testing and commissioning after installation or repair.
• Maintain accurate records of completed maintenance and repair work.
• Coordinate with supervisors, engineers, electricians, and other technicians.
• Follow health, safety, quality, and environmental procedures.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
• Report equipment defects, safety hazards, and material requirements to the supervisor.
• Provide guidance to junior fitters and helpers when required.

Qualifications

• ITI, Diploma, vocational certificate, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Fitting, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience as a Mechanical Fitter.
• Practical experience in mechanical installation, maintenance, and repair.
• Good knowledge of pumps, motors, bearings, gearboxes, valves, and rotating equipment.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings and technical manuals.
• Basic knowledge of workplace safety procedures, permit-to-work systems, and lockout/tagout procedures.

Required Skills

• Mechanical troubleshooting and fault diagnosis.
• Equipment installation and assembly.
• Preventive and corrective maintenance.
• Shaft and equipment alignment.
• Accurate use of measuring tools such as Vernier callipers, micrometres, dial gauges, and feeler gauges.
• Safe operation of hand and power tools.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
• Good attention to detail.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet maintenance deadlines.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and handle mechanical components safely.
• Ability to stand, bend, climb, and work in confined or elevated areas when required.
• Willingness to work in workshop, plant, site, or outdoor conditions.
• Ability to work shifts, overtime, weekends, or emergency call-outs when required.

Preferred Requirements

• Experience in manufacturing, maintenance, construction, facilities, marine, or industrial environments.
• Basic welding, cutting, grinding, or fabrication knowledge.
• Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
• Valid safety training or trade certification.
• Valid driving licence, where applicable.
