Job Description: Industrial Painter – Mid Level

Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced Industrial Painter to prepare and paint metal structures, boilers, pipes, tanks, equipment, machinery, and industrial surfaces. The successful candidate will carry out surface preparation, coating application, touch-up work, and quality inspections according to project specifications and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare metal, steel, concrete, and equipment surfaces before painting or coating.
  • Remove rust, scale, old paint, grease, dirt, and other surface contaminants.
  • Perform manual and mechanical surface preparation using scrapers, wire brushes, grinders, sanders, and power tools.
  • Apply primers, intermediate coats, and finishing coats according to approved specifications.
  • Use brushes, rollers, conventional spray guns, and airless spray-painting equipment.
  • Paint boilers, pipes, tanks, vessels, ducts, machinery, structural steel, and other industrial equipment.
  • Mix paints, thinners, primers, and coating materials according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Check paint colour, consistency, mixing ratio, pot life, and application requirements.
  • Mask and protect surfaces that do not require painting.
  • Measure and monitor wet-film and dry-film coating thickness when required.
  • Identify coating defects such as runs, sags, pinholes, blistering, peeling, and uneven coverage.
  • Carry out touch-up painting and repair damaged coating areas.
  • Ensure each coating layer is properly dried or cured before applying the next coat.
  • Read and follow paint specifications, method statements, safety data sheets, and work instructions.
  • Calculate paint and material requirements while minimising waste.
  • Clean and maintain spray guns, hoses, pumps, brushes, rollers, and other painting equipment.
  • Coordinate with supervisors, inspectors, scaffolders, blasters, fitters, and other workers.
  • Follow permit-to-work, working-at-height, confined-space, and hazardous-material procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Report material shortages, equipment defects, quality issues, and safety hazards to the supervisor.
  • Guide junior painters and helpers when required.

Qualifications

  • ITI, vocational certificate, trade certificate, or equivalent qualification in Industrial Painting or a related trade.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience as an Industrial Painter.
  • Practical experience in surface preparation and industrial coating application.
  • Experience using brush, roller, conventional spray, and airless spray-painting methods.
  • Basic knowledge of primers, epoxy coatings, polyurethane coatings, and protective paint systems.
  • Ability to understand paint specifications, technical data sheets, and safety data sheets.
  • Basic knowledge of permit-to-work, confined-space, working-at-height, and respiratory-protection procedures.

Required Skills

  • Industrial surface preparation.

  • Safe operation of airless spray-painting equipment.
  • Paint mixing and coating application.
  • Knowledge of protective and anti-corrosion coating systems.
  • Ability to identify and correct common paint defects.
  • Accurate use of wet-film and dry-film thickness gauges.
  • Safe use of grinders, sanders, wire brushes, and other preparation tools.
  • Good colour-matching and finishing skills.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and workmanship quality.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and handle paint containers, tools, hoses, and equipment safely.
  • Ability to work at heights, on scaffolding, and in confined spaces when required.
  • Willingness to work in dusty, hot, noisy, or outdoor industrial environments.
  • Ability to wear coveralls, gloves, safety goggles, respirators, and other personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to work shifts, overtime, weekends, or during shutdown and maintenance periods.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience in power plants, refineries, oil and gas facilities, manufacturing plants, shipyards, or industrial shutdown projects.
  • Experience painting boilers, tanks, pipelines, vessels, and structural steel.
  • Knowledge of surface-cleanliness and coating-thickness standards.
  • Experience with epoxy, polyurethane, zinc-rich, heat-resistant, and anti-corrosion coatings.
  • Basic knowledge of abrasive blasting operations.
  • Valid working-at-height, confined-space, respiratory-protection, or safety training certification.
  • Valid driving licence, where applicable.
