Job Description: Boiler Insulator – Mid Level

Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced Boiler Insulator to install, repair, and maintain thermal insulation systems on boilers, steam lines, pipelines, ducts, tanks, vessels, and other industrial equipment. The successful candidate will measure and cut insulation materials, install protective cladding, and ensure all work is completed according to technical specifications and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Install thermal insulation on boilers, pipes, ducts, tanks, vessels, valves, flanges, and mechanical equipment.
• Remove damaged or old insulation and prepare surfaces for new insulation installation.
• Measure, mark, cut, shape, and fit insulation materials according to drawings and site requirements.
• Install insulation materials such as mineral wool, rock wool, ceramic fibre, calcium silicate, glass wool, and polyurethane foam.
• Apply aluminium, stainless-steel, galvanised steel, or other protective cladding over insulation.
• Fabricate and install cladding around bends, elbows, reducers, valves, flanges, and irregular equipment surfaces.
• Secure insulation using wire, bands, clips, pins, adhesives, and other approved fixing methods.
• Perform hot and cold insulation work based on project requirements.
• Inspect installed insulation for gaps, damage, moisture, and poor workmanship.
• Repair or replace damaged insulation and cladding systems.
• Read and interpret insulation drawings, specifications, measurements, and work instructions.
• Calculate material requirements and minimise insulation and cladding waste.
• Work safely around boilers, steam systems, hot surfaces, scaffolding, and confined spaces.
• Coordinate with mechanical fitters, welders, scaffolders, supervisors, and other site personnel.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
• Report material shortages, equipment defects, safety hazards, and work progress to the supervisor.
• Guide junior insulators and helpers when required.
• Follow company health, safety, quality, and environmental procedures.

Qualifications

• ITI, vocational certificate, trade certificate, or equivalent qualification in Industrial Insulation or a related trade.
• Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience as an Industrial or Boiler Insulator.
• Practical experience in boiler, pipeline, vessel, duct, and equipment insulation.
• Experience in insulation removal, installation, repair, and cladding work.
• Ability to read insulation drawings, measurements, and technical specifications.
• Basic knowledge of permit-to-work, lockout/tagout, confined-space, and working-at-height procedures.

Required Skills

• Boiler and industrial equipment insulation.
• Hot and cold insulation installation.
• Accurate measurement, cutting, shaping, and fitting of insulation materials.
• Sheet-metal cladding fabrication and installation.
• Ability to work with aluminium, stainless-steel, and galvanised cladding.
• Knowledge of different insulation materials and their applications.
• Safe use of insulation knives, cutters, snips, drills, grinders, and hand tools.
• Good numerical and measurement skills.
• Ability to identify insulation defects and complete repairs.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
• Strong attention to detail and workmanship quality.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and handle insulation materials, cladding sheets, and tools safely.
• Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work for extended periods.
• Ability to work at heights, on scaffolding, and in confined spaces when required.
• Willingness to work near boilers, steam lines, hot surfaces, dust, and industrial equipment.
• Ability to wear personal protective equipment and respiratory protection when required.
• Ability to work shifts, overtime, weekends, or during shutdown and maintenance periods.

Preferred Requirements

• Experience in power plants, refineries, oil and gas facilities, manufacturing plants, or industrial shutdown projects.
• Experience with boiler shutdown, overhaul, and maintenance activities.
• Knowledge of removable insulation covers and insulation boxes for valves and flanges.
• Basic knowledge of asbestos awareness and safe insulation-removal procedures.
• Valid working-at-height, confined-space, scaffolding-user, or safety training certification.
• Valid driving licence, where applicable.
