Job Description

The Marine Rigger is responsible for executing safe and efficient rigging operations for heavy lifting activities in shipyards, marine facilities, and offshore environments. The role involves preparing lifting equipment, ensuring proper load handling, and working closely with crane operators and lifting supervisors to complete operations in compliance with approved lift plans, safety standards, and project requirements.


Key Responsibilities

Rigging & Lifting Operations

  • Select appropriate rigging gear based on load weight, center of gravity, and lifting method.

  • Install and secure slings, shackles, eyebolts, spreader beams, and lifting accessories.

  • Perform load slinging, balancing, and securing according to the approved lift plan.

  • Control loads using tag lines to prevent swinging or rotation.

  • Guide crane operators using standard hand signals and radio communication.

  • Participate in critical and heavy lifting operations.

Inspection & Equipment Control

  • Conduct pre-use inspection of all lifting gear and rigging equipment.

  • Identify damaged or defective equipment and report for replacement or certification.

  • Ensure all lifting tools have valid color coding and certification.

  • Maintain proper storage and housekeeping of rigging equipment.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow approved Lift Plans, Method Statements, and Risk Assessments.

  • Participate in Toolbox Talks and Job Safety Analysis (JSA).

  • Ensure compliance with HSE procedures and Permit-to-Work systems.

  • Maintain safe working distances and ensure the lifting area is barricaded.

  • Stop work immediately if unsafe conditions are identified.

  • Ensure proper communication and coordination during lifting operations.

Marine / Offshore Specific Duties

  • Perform rigging activities near waterline, on vessels, barges, or offshore platforms.

  • Consider environmental factors such as wind speed, tide movement, and vessel motion.

  • Assist in loading/unloading heavy equipment, pipes, valves, and structural components.

  • Support installation of marine equipment and structural modules.


Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of rigging methods and lifting equipment.

  • Ability to read and understand lift plans and basic drawings.

  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to work at heights and in harsh outdoor/marine environments.

  • Physically fit and able to handle manual rigging tasks.

  • Awareness of emergency procedures and hazard identification.


Working Conditions

  • Outdoor work in shipyards, offshore platforms, or marine sites.

  • Exposure to weather conditions, heavy equipment, and marine environments.

  • Shift work, extended hours, or offshore rotation may be required.
