Job Description

Job Summary

The Marine Pipe Fitter is responsible for the fabrication, installation, modification, testing, and repair of piping systems aboard marine vessels and offshore structures. The role supports safe vessel operation by ensuring all pipe systems meet design specifications, class requirements, and marine safety standards under shipboard and shipyard conditions.


Key Responsibilities

Pipe Fabrication & Installation

  • Fabricate, install, and repair piping systems for:

    • Fuel oil, diesel oil, lube oil

    • Sea water, fresh water, cooling systems

    • Ballast, bilge, and fire-fighting systems

    • Hydraulic and pneumatic lines

  • Measure, cut, bend, align, and fit pipes using approved tools and methods.

  • Install valves, flanges, expansion joints, supports, hangers, and brackets.

  • Ensure correct pipe routing, slope, and clearance per marine drawings.

Materials & Standards

  • Work with carbon steel, stainless steel, copper-nickel (Cu-Ni), and alloy piping.

  • Select correct gaskets, bolts, and fittings based on pressure, temperature, and fluid type.

  • Apply corrosion protection and insulation as required.

Testing & Commissioning

  • Perform pressure testing, hydrostatic testing, and leak checks.

  • Assist with flushing, cleaning, and commissioning of pipe systems.

  • Rectify defects identified during testing or class inspections.

Marine Environment Work

  • Work in confined spaces (engine rooms, tanks, voids).

  • Install piping in restricted and complex shipboard layouts.

  • Secure piping to withstand vibration, thermal expansion, and vessel movement.

Maintenance & Repair

  • Remove and replace damaged or corroded piping.

  • Conduct onboard repairs during dry dock or afloat repairs.

  • Respond to emergency pipe failures and leakage situations.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow permit-to-work systems (hot work, confined space, pressure testing).

  • Comply with:

    • Classification society rules (ABS, DNV, LR, BV, etc.)

    • IMO / SOLAS requirements

    • Shipyard and vessel safety management systems

  • Maintain proper housekeeping and control of dropped objects.

Coordination & Documentation

  • Coordinate with welders, engineers, inspectors, and supervisors.

  • Read and interpret isometric drawings, P&IDs, and ship layouts.

  • Report completed work and defects to supervision.


Required Qualifications

  • Trade Certificate in Pipe Fitting / Marine Pipe Fitting.

  • Confined Space Entry certification.

  • Hot Work / Gas Test certification (preferred).

  • Ability to read marine piping drawings and isometrics.

  • Seafarer medical and documents (if vessel-based).


Technical Skills

  • Pipe cutting, threading, bending, and alignment.

  • Flange make-up and torqueing techniques.

  • Use of hand tools, power tools, and pipe fabrication equipment.

  • Understanding of pipe stress, vibration, and thermal expansion basics.

  • Knowledge of marine piping materials and corrosion control.
