Job Description

The Marine Scaffolder is responsible for the erection, modification, inspection, and dismantling of scaffolding systems aboard vessels, offshore structures, and in shipyard environments. The role supports safe access for maintenance, repair, and construction activities while complying with marine safety regulations, confined-space requirements, and vessel operational constraints.


Key Responsibilities

Scaffolding Installation & Removal

  • Erect, alter, and dismantle scaffolding systems aboard:

    • Ships (engine rooms, tanks, cargo holds, superstructures)

    • Offshore platforms and marine structures

    • Dry docks and shipyards

  • Install fixed and temporary access platforms, stair towers, handrails, and working decks.

  • Secure scaffolding to withstand vessel movement, vibration, and environmental loads.

Marine-Specific Work Conditions

  • Work safely in confined spaces, enclosed compartments, and elevated areas.

  • Adapt scaffolding designs to irregular ship structures and limited access points.

  • Ensure scaffolding does not obstruct critical systems, escape routes, or vessel operations.

Inspection & Safety

  • Inspect scaffolding components before use for corrosion, damage, or deformation.

  • Ensure load ratings, tie-ins, bracing, and decking meet marine safety standards.

  • Install toe boards, guardrails, and fall protection systems.

  • Tag scaffolds (safe/unsafe) according to site procedures.

  • Maintain housekeeping and prevent dropped-object hazards.

Compliance & Procedures

  • Comply with:

    • Shipyard and vessel safety management systems

    • Permit-to-work systems (hot work, confined space, work at height)

    • Flag state, class, and company requirements

  • Follow risk assessments, method statements, and toolbox talks.

  • Support safety audits, inspections, and corrective actions.

Coordination & Support

  • Coordinate with marine engineers, welders, painters, and inspectors.

  • Modify scaffolding layouts as work scopes change.

  • Assist during emergency access or urgent repair situations.


Required Qualifications

  • Certified Scaffolder (Marine / Industrial) qualification.

  • Valid Working at Height certification.

  • Confined Space Entry certification (preferred).

  • Knowledge of tube & fitting, modular, or system scaffolding.

  • Seafarer documents (if vessel-based), including medical fitness as required.


Technical Skills

  • Ability to read scaffolding drawings and access plans.

  • Proper use of hand tools, power tools, and lifting equipment.

  • Understanding of load calculations and scaffold classifications.

  • Knowledge of marine corrosion effects on scaffolding materials.

  • Safe rigging and securing techniques for moving platforms.
