Job Description

The Mechanical Technician (Marine) is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of marine mechanical systems aboard vessels and in dockyard environments. The role supports safe, reliable, and efficient vessel operations by ensuring all mechanical equipment performs to specification and complies with regulatory and company standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance on marine mechanical systems, including main engines, auxiliary engines, gearboxes, pumps, compressors, valves, and propulsion systems.

  • Diagnose mechanical faults using drawings, manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools; identify root causes and implement effective repairs.

  • Carry out overhauls, alignments, installations, and commissioning of mechanical equipment.

  • Conduct routine inspections and condition monitoring to ensure equipment reliability and safety.

  • Assist with dry-dock activities, refits, and emergency repairs as required.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, reports, and spare parts usage in accordance with company procedures.

  • Ensure all work complies with safety regulations, environmental standards, and maritime classification requirements.

  • Coordinate with engineers, electricians, and operations personnel to support vessel readiness and minimize downtime.

  • Use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments correctly and safely.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to maintenance practices and reliability.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Technical diploma or certification in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related trade.

  • Proven experience as a mechanical technician in a marine, offshore, shipyard, or heavy industrial environment.

  • Strong knowledge of marine engines, propulsion systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, and specifications.

  • Familiarity with planned maintenance systems (PMS) is an advantage.

  • Relevant marine safety training and certifications (as applicable).

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

  • High attention to detail and commitment to safety.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team under operational pressure.

  • Good communication skills for reporting and coordination.

  • Physically fit and capable of working in confined spaces, engine rooms, and varying weather conditions.

Working Conditions

  • Shipboard, dockyard, and offshore environments.

  • May involve shift work, extended hours, travel, or rotation schedules.

  • Exposure to noise, heat, machinery, and marine operating conditions.
