The Mid-Level Welding Supervisor is responsible for managing day-to-day welding operations on the shop floor, overseeing welder performance, enforcing compliance with welding procedures and safety regulations, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality welded products. This role bridges production execution with quality and operational leadership.
Supervise welding activities including SMAW, GTAW, MIG/MAG, and FCAW
Allocate tasks, monitor welder performance, and ensure timely job execution
Enforce use of approved WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications) for each job
Inspect welding joints for conformity to drawings and specifications
Coordinate with QA/QC teams for stage and final inspections
Ensure compliance with codes and standards (ASME, AWS, ISO, etc.)
Monitor and document weld repairs, rework, and non-conformance
Lead a team of welders, helpers, and tackers across shifts
Provide on-the-job training to junior welders and guide new joiners
Collaborate with fitters, foremen, and quality inspectors to resolve issues
Enforce mandatory use of PPE (helmets, gloves, aprons, etc.)
Ensure compliance with hot work permits, ventilation requirements, and fire safety
Conduct toolbox talks and participate in safety audits
Maintain welding logs, welder performance reports, and WPS traceability
Support welding documentation for audits and third-party inspections
Assist in maintaining welder qualification records and continuity logs
Supervise welding operations and ensure adherence to technical specs
Monitor consumables (electrodes, filler wires, shielding gases) usage
Ensure machines and welding sets are maintained and calibrated properly
Maintain high-quality workmanship and reduce rework rates
Interface with planning, stores, and QA for production flow coordination
Diploma / ITI in Welding Technology / Mechanical / Fabrication
4–7 years of experience in welding supervision within manufacturing or fabrication
Sound knowledge of welding techniques and metallurgy
Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and weld symbols
Familiarity with ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, ISO 9606, or equivalent codes
Strong team leadership and coordination skills
Proficient in report writing, documentation, and basic computer use
Certified Welding Supervisor (AWS-CWS) or Certified Welding Inspector (CSWIP/CWI)
Experience with fabrication of tanks, skids, piping, structural steel, or pressure vessels
Exposure to ERP systems or digital weld traceability tools
Workshop/fabrication shop environment
Exposure to heat, fumes, and welding operations – PPE mandatory
May include extended hours, weekend shifts, or overtime during peak delivery periods
