Welding Engineer – Aerospace TIG/Orbital Welding Procedures

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are looking for a highly experienced Senior Welding Engineer with specialized expertise in TIG and Orbital Welding for aerospace applications. The ideal candidate will lead the development, qualification, and continuous improvement of welding procedures in compliance with aerospace standards such as AWS D17.1, AS9100, and NADCAP. This role demands deep technical knowledge, leadership capabilities, and hands-on involvement in high-precision welding for critical aerospace components.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, qualification, and continuous improvement of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) per aerospace standards.

  • Define and oversee TIG (GTAW) and Orbital welding procedures for high-performance aerospace materials including titanium, Inconel, Hastelloy, stainless steels, and aluminum alloys.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior welding engineers and welding technicians.

  • Spearhead root cause analysis and corrective actions for welding defects and production issues.

  • Coordinate and lead welder certification programs and ensure ongoing compliance with industry standards.

  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams to ensure weld design and execution meet all performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.

  • Prepare and review technical documentation including weld maps, inspection reports, and compliance records for customer and NADCAP audits.

  • Drive innovation in welding technologies and automation, including robotic or programmable orbital welding systems.

  • Represent welding engineering during design reviews, customer meetings, and internal quality audits.

Key Focus Areas

  • Advanced TIG & Orbital Welding: Deep hands-on and theoretical knowledge, including parameter optimization and automation integration.

  • Aerospace Standards Mastery: In-depth understanding of AWS D17.1, AS9100, NADCAP, and customer-specific standards.

  • Metallurgy & Heat Treatment: Solid background in metallurgy, weldability, and post-weld heat treatments of aerospace alloys.

  • Audit & Compliance Leadership: Experience with internal/external audits (e.g., NADCAP), including leading documentation and process alignment.

  • Welding Automation: Implementation and refinement of orbital welding systems for repeatability and precision.

  • Process Improvement & Quality Assurance: Proven track record in reducing weld defects and enhancing throughput without compromising on quality.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Strong project leadership in cross-department teams including design, production, and quality.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.

  • Minimum 7–10 years of welding engineering experience in the aerospace sector.

  • AWS Certified Welding Engineer (CWE) or Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) – highly preferred.

  • Proficient in CAD, welding simulation software, and documentation tools.

  • Demonstrated experience with orbital welding equipment programming and validation.
