Welding Engineer (ASME IX, AWS D1.1, API 1104)

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are looking for a technically inclined and motivated Junior Welding Engineer to support welding activities in high-integrity fabrication and construction projects involving pipelines, pressure vessels, and structural works. The role involves assisting in welding procedure development, inspection support, and quality assurance in compliance with ASME IX, AWS D1.1, and API 1104 standards.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and qualification of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR).

  • Support welding inspections and verification of weld joint preparation, fit-up, and visual inspections.

  • Coordinate with welders, supervisors, and QA/QC teams to ensure compliance with approved WPSs.

  • Help maintain records of welder qualifications (WPQs) and monitor their validity and performance.

  • Attend and record welding trials, mockups, and production welds as required by project specifications.

  • Assist in reviewing welding-related NCRs and implementing corrective actions under supervision.

  • Participate in material traceability checks, especially filler material control and heat number tracking.

  • Familiarize with welding symbols, engineering drawings, and isometric interpretation for field application.

  • Liaise with the NDT team for timely inspection of completed welds and proper documentation of results.

  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols during welding operations.


Key Focus Areas:

  • Welding Code Knowledge: Working knowledge of ASME Section IX (pressure components), AWS D1.1 (structural welding), and API 1104 (pipeline welding).

  • WPS/PQR/WPQ Support: Involvement in documentation, review, and trials for welding procedure qualification.

  • Welding Process Monitoring: Basic understanding of SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and FCAW techniques.

  • Field Welding Support: On-site exposure to pipe welding, structural connections, and fabrication joints.

  • Welder Coordination: Assisting in tracking and maintaining welder certifications and continuity.

  • Documentation: Maintaining welding logs, traceability charts, and assisting in quality record generation.

  • Learning & Growth: Strong focus on learning industry welding practices, standards, and field engineering skills.


Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Welding Engineering, or related field.

  • Certifications (Optional but Preferred):

    • Basic knowledge or certification in ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, and API 1104 welding requirements.

    • NDT Level I (VT) or general knowledge of NDT methods is a plus.

  • Experience:

    • 0–2 years in welding, fabrication, or QA/QC in oil & gas or EPC projects (internship or site training acceptable).

  • Skills & Attributes:

    • Understanding of welding symbols, joint configurations, and drawing interpretation.

    • Basic knowledge of metallurgy, welding defects, and inspection requirements.

    • Strong communication and willingness to work in field/site conditions.

    • Computer literacy in MS Office (Excel, Word) and familiarity with quality documentation.
