Vibration Monitoring Technician

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Vibration Monitoring Technician is a subject matter expert in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of vibration and condition monitoring data. The role involves advanced diagnostics of rotating equipment faults, coordination with maintenance teams, and mentorship of junior staff. The technician plays a key role in asset health management, failure prevention, and reliability improvement of plant machinery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead routine and special condition monitoring activities on critical rotating equipment (e.g., turbines, compressors, pumps, motors, fans).

  • Perform advanced vibration analysis (FFT, time waveform, phase analysis, envelope detection) and diagnose complex faults like resonance, looseness, misalignment, imbalance, and bearing degradation.

  • Recommend corrective actions based on diagnostics and coordinate with maintenance teams during shutdowns and repairs.

  • Validate post-maintenance vibration data to ensure successful fault elimination.

  • Create and optimize monitoring routes, alarm settings, and reporting formats in vibration monitoring software.

  • Provide coaching, on-the-job training, and technical guidance to junior and mid-level technicians.

  • Participate in root cause analysis (RCA), reliability investigations, and failure reporting.

  • Ensure calibration, maintenance, and inventory control of condition monitoring equipment.

  • Work closely with engineers and OEMs during overhauls and commissioning for vibration baseline measurements.

  • Ensure strict adherence to plant safety policies and LOTO procedures during all monitoring activities.

Key Focus Areas:

🔍 Advanced Diagnostics & Fault Identification

  • Analyze and interpret complex vibration patterns using tools like orbit plots, spectrum comparison, and demodulation to pinpoint failure causes.

📈 Reliability & Predictive Maintenance Strategy

  • Lead initiatives for predictive maintenance and reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) by integrating condition monitoring data into planning.

🧠 Technical Leadership & Training

  • Mentor less-experienced technicians and conduct internal knowledge-sharing sessions on vibration principles and new technologies.

🛠️ Instrumentation & Software Proficiency

  • Mastery of tools such as Emerson CSI, SKF Microlog, Bently Nevada, etc., and vibration platforms like AMS, System 1, or PRUFTECHNIK OMNITREND.

🛡️ Safety & Risk Management

  • Promote and enforce compliance with safety standards, PPE usage, confined space entry, and LOTO procedures in all condition monitoring activities.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Diploma or Degree in Mechanical / Instrumentation / Electrical Engineering

  • Experience: 7+ years in vibration monitoring, rotating equipment diagnostics, or condition-based maintenance

  • Preferred Industry: Power Generation, Oil & Gas, Petrochemicals, Steel, Cement, or other large continuous-process industries

Skills & Competencies:

  • Deep understanding of rotating machinery failure modes and condition monitoring techniques

  • Expertise in vibration analysis tools and signal interpretation

  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly through detailed reports and presentations

  • Strong troubleshooting and decision-making skills in critical equipment situations

  • Familiar with thermography, ultrasonic, motor current analysis (desirable)

Preferred Certifications:

  • ISO 18436-2 Category II or III in Vibration Analysis

  • OEM platform training (GE, Siemens, BHEL, etc.) for critical rotating machines

  • Safety Certifications: LOTO, Confined Space Entry, Permit to Work, First Aid

Working Conditions:

  • Industrial environment with exposure to noise, heat, rotating machinery, and fieldwork

  • Shift work or extended hours may be required during major maintenance events or outages

  • Work involves climbing, confined space entry, and handling sensitive instrumentation

  • PPE compliance is mandatory at all times
