Valve Test Technician – Hydrostatic and Flow Testing

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a skilled Mid-Level Valve Test Technician to perform hydrostatic and flow testing on a variety of marine and industrial valves. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with pressure testing procedures, a strong understanding of safety protocols, and the ability to interpret technical documentation and test specifications. This role ensures valves meet performance, safety, and compliance standards before shipment or installation.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Perform hydrostatic pressure tests, air pressure tests, and flow testing on control, relief, isolation, and check valves.

    • Setup and operate test benches, gauges, and pressure rigs in accordance with ASME, API, or client-specific standards.

    • Read and interpret engineering drawings, valve test specifications, and P&ID schematics.

    • Document and report test results, including leakage rates, cracking pressures, and test durations, using company-approved formats.

    • Verify valve integrity and sealing performance under simulated service conditions.

    • Identify valve performance issues and recommend corrective actions (repair, rework, or re-test).

    • Ensure proper calibration of testing instruments and maintain test equipment.

    • Maintain adherence to EHS protocols, ensuring a safe working environment under high-pressure conditions.

    • Coordinate with Quality Assurance, Engineering, and Production teams on non-conformance issues.

    • Support training of junior technicians and new hires as needed.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Hydrostatic Testing Excellence:

    • Pressure retention and leakage inspection.

    • Compliance with hydrostatic test cycles and hold times.

  2. Flow Testing & Functional Checks:

    • Evaluate valve Cv (flow coefficient), response times, and actuation performance under flow conditions.

    • Operate and monitor fluid circuits with real-time flow meters and pressure drop calculations.

  3. Instrumentation & Data Logging:

    • Proficient use of pressure transducers, digital gauges, and automated test control systems.

    • Document test cycles and results using data acquisition systems.

  4. Valve Types & Materials:

    • Familiar with a wide range of valves (globe, gate, ball, butterfly, relief, control).

    • Work with valves made from different materials (brass, bronze, stainless steel, duplex alloys).

  5. Regulatory Compliance & Standards:

    • Knowledge of relevant testing standards including API 598, MSS-SP-61, ISO 5208, and ASME B16.34.

    • Ensure traceability and documentation for ABS, USCG, DNV, or client-specific audits.

Qualifications and Skills:

    • Diploma or ITI in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical training.

    • 3–5 years of hands-on valve testing experience in a marine, oil & gas, or industrial setting.

    • Strong mechanical aptitude with experience handling valves ½” to 24” or larger.

    • Working knowledge of testing equipment, including hydraulic pumps, flow benches, and nitrogen/air systems.

    • Familiarity with safety protocols for high-pressure systems.

    • Good communication and reporting skills.

    • Physically fit to handle heavy components and work in industrial environments.

Preferred:

    • Certification in valve testing or NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) is an asset.

    • Experience in shipyard or offshore environments.

    • Knowledge of automated valve test stands and digital pressure recorders.
