Valve Machining Technician

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Valve Machining Technician is responsible for leading the precision machining of critical valve components using CNC and manual machines. This role involves advanced setup, tooling optimization, process troubleshooting, and mentoring junior technicians. The technician ensures all machined parts meet tight tolerances, surface finish standards, and production timelines, while supporting continuous improvement in machining quality and productivity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently program, set up, and operate CNC turning, milling, and grinding machines for valve components.

  • Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, GD&T specifications, and process control plans.

  • Ensure parts are machined to tight tolerances (micron-level), with high-quality surface finishes and dimensional accuracy.

  • Conduct full dimensional inspections and validate critical features using high-precision measuring instruments.

  • Analyze machining defects, root causes, and implement corrective actions.

  • Lead tool selection, offset adjustments, and tooling optimization for improved cycle time and tool life.

  • Support development and validation of new machining processes for prototype and pilot batches.

  • Train and mentor junior and mid-level machinists on best practices, safety, and precision techniques.

  • Collaborate with production planning, engineering, and quality teams to resolve machining or quality issues.

  • Maintain detailed records of part runs, process changes, and inspection reports for traceability.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Advanced Machining Expertise:

    • Execute complex setups and first-article machining with minimal supervision.

    • Work on multi-axis CNC machines or fine-tolerance grinding applications.

  2. Process Optimization & Tooling:

    • Optimize feeds, speeds, and tool paths for efficiency and precision.

    • Recommend improvements in fixturing, programming, and process flow.

  3. Dimensional Accuracy & Inspection:

    • Perform critical dimensional checks using micrometers, bore gauges, CMMs, or air gauges.

    • Interpret and apply GD&T for feature control in valve machining.

  4. Problem Solving & Quality Assurance:

    • Identify causes of dimensional or surface defects and suggest preventive actions.

    • Lead quality investigations related to machining deviations.

  5. Mentorship & Team Leadership:

    • Guide less experienced technicians in setup, measurement, and part quality control.

    • Share machining knowledge to improve team skills and reduce errors.

Qualifications:

  • ITI / Diploma in Mechanical / Tool & Die / Production Engineering.

  • 5–10+ years of hands-on machining experience in valve, automotive, aerospace, or precision engineering sectors.

  • Strong expertise in CNC programming (Fanuc, Siemens, Mazak, etc.) and advanced toolpath optimization.

  • Proficient in interpreting GD&T and using high-accuracy inspection tools.

  • Excellent understanding of material behavior (e.g., stainless steel, Inconel, hardened steels).

  • Experience with process documentation, quality audits, and machine maintenance routines.

  • Leadership ability, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills.
