Valve Design Supervisor

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Valve Design Supervisor leads the design and development of industrial valves, ensuring products meet global standards, customer specifications, and manufacturing requirements. The role involves managing a team of engineers and drafters, guiding technical decisions, overseeing drawing releases, and driving innovation and continuous improvement in valve product engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the end-to-end design and development of valves (e.g., gate, globe, check, ball, butterfly, control, safety, and pressure relief valves).

  • Supervise the preparation and approval of detailed drawings, 3D models, assembly layouts, and engineering documentation.

  • Ensure designs meet applicable standards: API, ASME, ISO, ANSI, PED, IBR, and customer-specific codes.

  • Guide the engineering team on DFM/DFA principles, material selection, tolerance stack-up, sealing mechanisms, and critical component design.

  • Oversee and verify design calculations for pressure ratings, flow coefficients (Cv), wall thickness, and spring selection (for control/safety valves).

  • Collaborate with testing, manufacturing, procurement, and quality teams during prototype development, type testing, and production ramp-up.

  • Lead design reviews and provide technical direction to resolve complex design challenges and customer-specific adaptations.

  • Manage engineering change processes (ECR/ECN), revision control, and product data management (PDM/PLM).

  • Drive value engineering, cost optimization, and localization initiatives without compromising performance or safety.

  • Mentor and train junior and mid-level design staff to build technical capability and ensure adherence to design best practices.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Advanced Valve Design Expertise:

    • Strong technical command of design principles across various valve types and pressure classes.

    • Ability to optimize performance, reduce leakage risk, and improve longevity of valve systems.

  2. Standards & Certification Compliance:

    • Deep knowledge of international standards: API 6D, API 600/602, ASME B16.34, ISO 5208, ISO 5211, and EN/PED/IBR.

    • Experience supporting customer audits and third-party inspection agencies (TPIA).

  3. Team Leadership & Project Management:

    • Lead a team of 5–10 engineers and drafters.

    • Plan and prioritize design activities, manage workloads, and track project milestones and deadlines.

  4. Cross-Functional & Customer Interface:

    • Liaise with production, sales, quality, and customers to address design queries, customization needs, and non-conformities.

    • Translate customer requirements into viable product designs and documentation.

  5. Innovation & Continuous Improvement:

    • Champion new product development (NPD), reverse engineering, and product upgrades.

    • Promote use of FEA, CFD, and simulation tools to improve performance and reliability.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Mechanical / Design / Production Engineering.

  • 8–12 years of experience in valve design, with proven leadership and product delivery record.

  • Advanced proficiency in CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo) and drawing standards (ASME Y14.5, GD&T).

  • Experience working with PDM/PLM systems like Windchill, Teamcenter, or SAP.

  • Strong analytical thinking, cross-functional communication, and mentorship abilities.
