VP of Technical Operations – Marine Power and Energy Systems

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The VP of Technical Operations – Marine Power and Energy Systems leads the global execution of technical programs related to marine propulsion, onboard power generation, hybrid systems, and electrical integration. This executive-level role ensures alignment between engineering design, manufacturing, commissioning, and field service functions, with a focus on delivering operational excellence, fleet readiness, and lifecycle efficiency for both naval and commercial platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead all technical operations across the lifecycle of marine power systems—from system integration and installation to sea trials, maintenance, and modernization.

    • Oversee global technical teams managing gas/steam turbines, diesel-electric systems, hybrid energy architectures, and energy storage integration.

    • Serve as the top-level decision-maker on power plant layout, commissioning readiness, failure recovery protocols, and performance optimization.

    • Align engineering execution with customer mission requirements, contractual performance goals, and fleet support strategies.

    • Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for commissioning, diagnostics, root cause analysis, and field service excellence.

    • Ensure system compliance with IMO, ABS, DNV, USCG, and MIL-SPEC power and safety standards.

    • Manage technical documentation, fleet configuration baselines, and long-term support plans (ILS, obsolescence strategies, spares programs).

    • Drive collaboration between engineering, manufacturing, shipyard integration teams, and customer technical authorities.

    • Champion a data-driven operations culture, leveraging condition-based maintenance, predictive analytics, and real-time monitoring systems.

    • Represent the company in executive customer reviews, technical audits, and regulatory inspections globally.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Fleet-Wide Technical Performance
    – Ensure reliability, availability, and performance of power and propulsion systems across the global vessel portfolio.

  2. Lifecycle and Field Operations Management
    – Oversee execution from installation and testing through lifecycle maintenance, upgrades, and decommissioning.

  3. Operational Standardization and Compliance
    – Establish and enforce technical procedures aligned with international marine and defense standards.

  4. Strategic Integration of Emerging Technologies
    – Guide technical readiness of next-generation systems like hybrid-electric propulsion and energy storage.

Qualifications and Skills:

    • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Power Systems, or a related discipline.

    • 15+ years of experience in technical operations or engineering management for marine power systems.

    • Proven expertise with propulsion system integration, energy conversion systems, high-voltage marine electrical systems, and thermal management.

    • Deep familiarity with gas turbines, diesel generators, hybrid systems, propulsion control, and power management automation.

    • Knowledge of classification society rules, emissions standards (IMO Tier III, EEXI), and defense/military vessel requirements.

    • Strong leadership skills with experience managing cross-functional, multi-site technical teams.

    • Demonstrated ability to lead complex global projects with large technical and field support components.

    • Proficient in fleet analytics, maintenance tracking systems, and condition-based monitoring tools.

Preferred:

    • Experience with naval ship propulsion support, shipyard programs, or OEM field operations.

    • Familiarity with digital twin implementations, smart maintenance strategies, or AI-assisted diagnostics.

    • Certifications in PMP, Six Sigma, Reliability Engineering, or similar operational disciplines.

    • Eligible for security clearance (for defense sector engagements).
