VP of Engineering – Steam and Mechanical Power Systems

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Vice President of Engineering – Steam and Mechanical Power Systems will lead the engineering strategy, design oversight, and lifecycle management of thermal and mechanical power generation systems across marine, industrial, or utility applications. This role is responsible for driving technical innovation, ensuring regulatory compliance, and aligning engineering capabilities with business objectives in energy-intensive operations involving high-pressure steam systems, turbines, heat exchangers, and mechanical drives.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Provide strategic leadership and direction for the design, development, and optimization of steam and mechanical power systems for vessels, power plants, or industrial facilities.

    • Oversee a multi-disciplinary engineering team including mechanical, thermal, controls, and systems engineers.

    • Set engineering standards and technical governance for steam generators, prime movers (turbines, engines), rotating equipment, and energy recovery systems.

    • Lead technology selection, system architecture, and design validation for major capital and R&D projects.

    • Ensure compliance with all applicable standards (ASME, ISO, API), maritime regulations (IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL), and safety codes.

    • Drive innovation in fuel efficiency, waste heat recovery, emissions reduction, and digital monitoring of mechanical systems.

    • Represent engineering in strategic planning, M&A due diligence, and technology partnership development.

    • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and commercial teams to ensure systems are reliable, cost-effective, and scalable.

    • Manage budgets, schedules, and resource allocation for engineering programs and initiatives.

    • Mentor senior engineering leaders and foster a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.

Key Focus Areas:

    • Steam System Engineering: Technical oversight of high-pressure boilers, steam turbines, condensers, and distribution networks.

    • Mechanical Power Integration: Optimization of mechanical drive systems including propulsion, pumps, compressors, and auxiliary machinery.

    • Regulatory Compliance & Safety: Ensure all systems meet local and international safety, environmental, and classification standards.

    • Technology Leadership: Lead R&D into advanced steam cycles, combined heat and power (CHP), hybrid energy systems, and smart monitoring platforms.

    • Strategic Influence: Shape company-wide policies on energy infrastructure, sustainability targets, and engineering workforce development.

Qualifications & Experience:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related field (MBA or Executive Leadership Training preferred).

    • 15+ years of engineering experience with at least 5–7 years in executive or senior leadership roles in steam/mechanical power sectors.

    • Deep expertise in steam generation, thermodynamics, mechanical drives, and energy system integration.

    • Demonstrated experience leading large-scale design, retrofit, or greenfield projects in marine, energy, or heavy industrial sectors.

    • Strong knowledge of international codes and standards (ASME Section I & VIII, API 612/617, ISO 9001, IMO/MARPOL).

    • Proven leadership in innovation, process improvement, and cross-functional project delivery.

Preferred Credentials / Experience:

    • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).

    • Experience in both marine (e.g., shipboard steam systems) and land-based (e.g., industrial CHP) applications.

    • Familiarity with emissions abatement technologies, hybrid propulsion systems, and renewable integration.

    • Experience working with OEMs, shipyards, EPCs, and regulatory bodies on capital programs.
