VP – Vehicle Structures and Tooling

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Vice President – Vehicle Structures and Tooling leads the development and execution of engineering strategies for vehicle structural systems and manufacturing tooling across global operations. This role is responsible for ensuring robust, lightweight, cost-effective structural solutions aligned with vehicle safety, performance, and production efficiency. The VP oversees end-to-end tooling development—from concept to launch—supporting BIW, chassis, closures, and final assembly systems. The role demands close collaboration with product design, CAE, manufacturing, and supplier teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead global strategy for structural systems including BIW, chassis frames, cross members, and underbody modules.

  • Oversee design and integration of structural components across multiple vehicle programs to meet safety, stiffness, and durability targets.

  • Direct the development and deployment of tooling strategies including stamping dies, welding fixtures, assembly tools, and checking gauges.

  • Drive alignment of structural engineering with design for manufacturability (DFM), assembly (DFA), and tooling feasibility.

  • Lead early engagement with design and CAE teams to guide structure layout and load path optimization.

  • Manage CAPEX planning, sourcing strategy, and launch readiness for tooling assets across global sites.

  • Ensure structural designs are optimized for joining technologies including MIG/spot welding, laser welding, adhesives, and mechanical fasteners.

  • Collaborate with material engineering teams to define lightweighting strategies using AHSS, aluminum, and composites.

  • Establish global standards for structural integrity, dimensional accuracy, and tooling design.

  • Build and lead high-performing engineering and tooling teams, including internal and supplier resources.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Structural Engineering Leadership:

    • Deliver crashworthy, lightweight structures that meet global safety standards and NVH requirements.

    • Ensure structural compatibility with electrification platforms and battery packaging strategies.

  2. Tooling Innovation & Strategy:

    • Drive the development of advanced tooling solutions for stamping, welding, hemming, and assembly.

    • Leverage simulation tools (e.g., formability, die tryout) to shorten development cycles and improve quality.

  3. Manufacturability & Process Integration:

    • Ensure structural designs are production-ready with minimal variation and rework.

    • Align tooling with lean manufacturing and high OEE performance goals.

  4. Material & Joining Optimization:

    • Champion integration of multi-material joints and efficient joining technologies tailored to each vehicle segment.

    • Guide teams on material compatibility, corrosion prevention, and thermal expansion management.

  5. Cross-functional & Global Program Execution:

    • Lead tooling and structural engineering support for vehicle launches globally.

    • Interface with design studios, manufacturing sites, suppliers, and executive stakeholders to ensure program alignment.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field; MBA is a plus.

  • 20+ years of experience in vehicle structural engineering and tooling development.

  • Proven leadership of large-scale automotive programs and global tooling launches.

  • Deep knowledge of structural design, joining technologies, CAE, and GD&T.

  • Expertise in stamping die design, automation fixtures, and final assembly tooling.

  • Strong background in lightweight materials, crash safety, and dimensional control.

  • Excellent leadership, program management, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
