The Junior Utilities Technician supports the safe and reliable operation of plant utility systems, including HVAC, boilers/steam systems, compressed air, chilled water, and water treatment. Working under the guidance of senior technicians or supervisors, this role assists with routine monitoring, preventive maintenance, and basic repairs to ensure continuous utility support for manufacturing and facility operations.
Assist with the daily operation of boilers, air compressors, chillers, and HVAC systems.
Monitor gauges, meters, and control panels to track system performance and identify abnormalities.
Record data and report irregularities to senior staff or supervisors.
Perform routine preventive maintenance tasks such as filter changes, oiling/lubrication, and inspections.
Support flushing, draining, and cleaning activities for water systems and air compressors.
Maintain accurate logs of maintenance activities in the CMMS.
Assist with troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and utility components (e.g., valves, motors, belts, traps).
Respond to utility service calls under supervision to support equipment uptime.
Replace minor components such as gauges, filters, gaskets, and fittings.
Follow all plant safety protocols, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space, and hot work procedures.
Support GMP, food safety, and sanitation compliance during utility operations.
Assist in ensuring systems operate within environmental and regulatory standards.
Work closely with senior utilities technicians and maintenance personnel on scheduled and emergency work.
Participate in shift handoffs, toolbox talks, and team safety meetings.
Assist with inventory management and tool organization.
Hands-on support for utility operations (HVAC, boilers, water systems)

High school diploma or GED required
Technical certificate or trade school training in HVAC, boiler operations, or industrial maintenance preferred
0–2 years of experience in utilities, facilities maintenance, or mechanical systems
Internship, co-op, or hands-on training in a manufacturing or plant environment is a plus
Basic understanding of steam, HVAC, and water distribution systems
Familiarity with tools used for mechanical maintenance and minor utility repairs
Ability to read gauges, basic schematics, and follow SOPs
Strong work ethic and willingness to learn from senior technicians
Good communication and attention to detail
Ability to follow instructions and safely complete hands-on tasks
