The Senior Utilities Maintenance Technician – Steam & Boilers is a key technical leader responsible for the reliability, efficiency, and compliance of all steam and boiler systems across the facility. This role oversees preventative and corrective maintenance, coordinates shutdowns, mentors junior staff, and ensures compliance with local, state, and industry standards (e.g., ASME, FDA, USDA). The senior technician supports utility optimization initiatives and drives continuous improvement of steam-related processes.
Oversee day-to-day operations of high-pressure boilers, deaerators, condensate systems, and steam distribution.
Analyze system performance, recommend adjustments for efficiency, and execute advanced diagnostics.
Monitor and maintain water chemistry to manufacturer and regulatory specifications.
Lead maintenance activities including burner tuning, PRV testing, trap replacement, and valve repair.
Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) on utility failures and implement long-term corrective actions.
Coordinate system overhauls during shutdowns or capital upgrades.
Ensure compliance with ASME codes, OSHA standards, and plant GMP protocols for boiler systems.
Maintain accurate records for inspections, calibrations, safety valves, and PM tasks.
Prepare for and support regulatory audits and insurance inspections.
Train and mentor junior and mid-level boiler techs on safety, operations, and system diagnostics.
Support cross-training on steam safety, startup/shutdown procedures, and emergency response.
Serve as a lead technician during utility expansions, retrofits, or commissioning of new systems.
Partner with Engineering, QA, Production, and Controls teams to align utility functions with production needs.
Contribute to energy efficiency projects and sustainable utility system improvements.
Act as SME (Subject Matter Expert) during incident investigations and facility audits.
Leadership in boiler operations, maintenance, and regulatory compliance
Steam system diagnostics, efficiency improvements, and reliability engineering
Mentorship of junior technicians and facilitation of utility system knowledge transfer
Root cause analysis and resolution of steam/utility failures
Support for energy optimization and sustainable utilities
High school diploma or GED required
Technical diploma or trade certification in steam/boiler systems, HVAC, or industrial maintenance preferred
Valid Boiler Operator License (where applicable) required
7+ years of experience operating and maintaining industrial steam and boiler systems
Prior experience in food, beverage, or pharmaceutical manufacturing preferred
Experience with combustion tuning, water treatment, and PLC-based boiler controls
Advanced knowledge of boiler mechanics, steam traps, pressure relief devices, and condensate systems
Proficient in reading P&IDs, utility schematics, and system manuals
Skilled in using digital maintenance systems (CMMS) and documenting compliance tasks
Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills

Strong communication skills and ability to lead technical crews
