The Mid-Level Utilities Maintenance Technician – Steam & Boilers is responsible for the daily operation, preventive maintenance, and minor repair of boiler systems, steam distribution networks, and associated utility infrastructure. The technician ensures equipment operates reliably and in compliance with plant safety, sanitation, and energy efficiency standards. This role requires hands-on troubleshooting, system monitoring, and routine coordination with plant maintenance and engineering teams.
Operate and monitor high- and low-pressure boiler systems, deaerators, steam traps, and condensate return systems.
Track system pressures, temperatures, and water chemistry; maintain logs and report abnormalities.
Perform water sampling and assist in managing water treatment schedules.
Conduct scheduled inspections and servicing of burners, valves, control panels, and safety devices.
Replace steam traps, clean boiler tubes, test safety relief valves, and calibrate sensors and gauges.
Troubleshoot utility system issues and perform minor repairs with minimal supervision.
Ensure compliance with ASME codes, OSHA regulations, and facility SOPs related to boilers and pressure systems.
Maintain safe work practices including lockout/tagout, confined space procedures, and PPE usage.
Participate in internal audits and documentation of boiler room activities and maintenance.
Work with controls technicians, production teams, and facility engineers during shutdowns or utility upgrades.
Support energy conservation efforts and utility system improvements.
Help train junior technicians on steam system safety and maintenance tasks.

High school diploma or GED required
Technical certificate or vocational training in industrial maintenance, HVAC, or steam systems preferred
Boiler Operator License (where required) preferred
3–6 years of experience in utility maintenance or boiler operations in an industrial setting
Experience in food, beverage, pharmaceutical, or other regulated manufacturing environments is a plus
Strong understanding of steam generation, condensate recovery, and water treatment fundamentals
Familiarity with boiler controls, flame safety systems, and steam valves/traps
Ability to read schematics, P&IDs, and equipment manuals
Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and safety-focused
Strong communication and troubleshooting skills
Team player with ability to respond effectively in emergency maintenance situations
