Job Title: Turbine Testing Technician (Dyno/Bench) – Automotive

Job Summary:

The Senior Turbine Testing Technician is a subject matter expert in the setup, execution, and optimization of turbocharger and turbine component testing using advanced dynamometer and bench systems. This role leads complex test programs, mentors junior technicians, and collaborates with engineering and R&D teams to validate high-performance components for automotive applications. The technician ensures the highest standards of accuracy, safety, and efficiency in all testing activities while supporting continuous improvement and innovation in the lab.

Key Responsibilities:

Advanced Test Execution & Setup

  • Independently configure and operate engine dynos and custom bench rigs for performance, endurance, and failure-mode testing of turbochargers and turbine assemblies.

  • Lead the installation and calibration of advanced instrumentation including high-speed sensors, thermocouples, strain gauges, and flow meters.

  • Create and optimize test setups for novel components, materials, or test procedures.

Technical Leadership & Mentorship

  • Train and mentor junior and mid-level technicians on test methods, safety, and troubleshooting.

  • Serve as the go-to technical expert for test rig maintenance, instrumentation, and complex issue resolution.

  • Provide input to engineers and program managers on test feasibility, equipment capability, and resource planning.

Data Integrity & Analysis Support

  • Ensure the accuracy, repeatability, and quality of test data collected during runs.

  • Review live data for abnormal behavior and initiate corrective actions during testing.

  • Assist in root cause analysis for failed components and contribute to engineering reviews.

Lab Operations & Maintenance

  • Lead preventive maintenance, calibration schedules, and reliability improvements for dyno and test equipment.

  • Coordinate with suppliers, tool rooms, and fabrication teams for fixture development and test hardware needs.

  • Maintain documentation and logs in accordance with IATF 16949, ISO 17025, and internal QA protocols.

Compliance & Safety Leadership

  • Ensure all test operations adhere to safety standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Drive safe practices and support continuous improvements in lab and test cell safety culture.

  • Participate in audits, incident reviews, and test documentation updates.

Qualifications & Skills:

Education:

  • Associate degree in Mechanical Technology, Automotive Technology, or related field required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience preferred

Certifications:

  • ASE certification, OSHA safety certification, or related credentials preferred

Experience:

  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in automotive testing, powertrain validation, or turbocharger development

  • Deep experience with dyno operations, data acquisition, and high-speed rotating machinery

  • Proven record of leading technical teams or high-complexity test projects

Technical Skills:

  • Expert-level skills in mechanical assembly, instrumentation setup, and troubleshooting

  • Proficient with data acquisition systems (LabVIEW, AVL PUMA, DEWESoft, etc.)

  • Solid understanding of turbocharging systems, thermal dynamics, fluid systems, and failure diagnostics

  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, and test procedures with minimal oversight
