Turbine Technician – Water Treatment Plant

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level Turbine Technician is responsible for performing mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of turbines and associated rotating equipment within a water treatment plant or desalination facility. This role ensures turbines used in pumping and energy recovery processes operate efficiently, safely, and within performance standards. The technician collaborates closely with operations, electrical, and instrumentation teams to minimize downtime and maximize equipment lifespan.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Turbine Operation & Maintenance:

    • Conduct routine and preventive maintenance on steam, gas, or hydraulic turbines associated with pumps and compressors.

    • Carry out inspection, alignment, balancing, and lubrication of turbine components.

  2. Troubleshooting & Repair:

    • Diagnose turbine and rotating equipment faults using vibration analysis, temperature monitoring, and other condition-based techniques.

    • Perform overhauls, seal replacements, bearing changes, and part refurbishments.

  3. Equipment Monitoring & Optimization:

    • Monitor operating parameters (RPM, temperature, pressure, flow rate) and ensure equipment performance is within specification.

    • Assist in implementing performance improvement measures.

  4. Coordination with Other Teams:

    • Collaborate with electrical, instrumentation, and process teams for maintenance shutdowns or emergency repairs.

    • Support commissioning and startup of new or overhauled equipment.

  5. Documentation & Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, service reports, and work order records.

    • Assist in preparing failure analysis reports and spare part requisitions.

  6. Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance:

    • Follow all safety protocols during maintenance activities and turbine operations.

    • Participate in hazard identification, risk assessments, and toolbox talks.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Turbine Reliability: Ensuring continuous and efficient turbine operation in support of water treatment or pumping processes.

  • Predictive & Preventive Maintenance: Applying proactive maintenance techniques to minimize unplanned downtime.

  • Technical Troubleshooting: Diagnosing and correcting performance issues using mechanical and operational data.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Working closely with multidisciplinary teams during maintenance and shutdowns.

Required Skills & Competencies:

Technical Skills:

  • Strong understanding of turbine systems (steam, gas, or hydro) and auxiliary components.

  • Familiarity with pump-turbine coupling systems and energy recovery devices.

  • Ability to read mechanical drawings, alignment charts, and O&M manuals.

Mechanical Aptitude:

  • Proficient in using hand and power tools, torque wrenches, alignment tools, and vibration meters.

  • Skilled in disassembly, reassembly, and precision fitting of turbine parts.

Diagnostics & Analysis:

  • Experience with condition monitoring techniques (vibration, thermography, oil analysis).

  • Basic understanding of SCADA or PLC-based systems is a plus.

Communication & Teamwork:

  • Strong communication skills for coordinating with team members and reporting to supervisors.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a technical maintenance team.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education: ITI/Diploma or B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Certifications:

    • OEM turbine maintenance training (preferred).

    • Safety certifications (Confined Space, Lockout-Tagout, Hot Work) are an advantage.

  • Experience: 4–8 years of hands-on experience in turbine maintenance within water treatment, power, or industrial utility plants.
