Turbine Maintenance Supervisor – Water Utilities

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Turbine Maintenance Supervisor – Water Utilities (Mid-Level) is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, inspection, and performance optimization of water turbines and auxiliary equipment used in water treatment, pumping, and generation systems. This role includes supervising technicians, planning preventive and corrective maintenance activities, and ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of mechanical assets. The position serves as a key technical resource in supporting turbine reliability and operational continuity across water utility operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervision & Scheduling:

    • Plan, schedule, and supervise day-to-day maintenance tasks for water turbines, gearboxes, couplings, seals, and related systems.

    • Assign duties to maintenance technicians and ensure timely execution of work orders.

  • Maintenance Execution & Troubleshooting:

    • Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance activities on turbines, including inspections, lubrication, alignment, and bearing replacement.

    • Diagnose operational issues, identify mechanical faults (e.g., wear, cavitation, vibration), and implement timely corrective actions.

  • Technical Support:

    • Interpret mechanical drawings, manuals, and schematics for turbine systems.

    • Assist in turbine overhauls, balancing, and major repairs in collaboration with OEMs and senior engineers.

    • Ensure proper alignment, torqueing, and fitment of components during reassembly.

  • Safety & Compliance:

    • Enforce safety procedures such as lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and work-at-height protocols.

    • Ensure all maintenance work complies with utility safety regulations and environmental standards.

  • Documentation & Reporting:

    • Maintain detailed records of turbine performance, maintenance history, and component replacements.

    • Update CMMS with accurate job reports, part usage, and work order status.

  • Team Development & Coordination:

    • Train and mentor junior technicians in proper turbine maintenance procedures.

    • Collaborate with planning, operations, and reliability teams to ensure cross-functional coordination.

  • Continuous Improvement:

    • Support root cause failure analysis (RCFA) for recurring issues.

    • Recommend process improvements and component upgrades to improve turbine efficiency and reduce downtime.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Turbine System Reliability:
Ensure consistent performance of turbines used in water pumping, distribution, or generation through structured maintenance practices.

  2. Preventive & Corrective Maintenance Planning:
Lead execution of maintenance routines and timely resolution of mechanical issues.

  3. Mechanical Fault Diagnosis:
Identify causes of performance decline or failure (e.g., misalignment, seal wear, bearing failure) and recommend corrective actions.

  4. Team Supervision & Technical Guidance:
Supervise technicians, provide on-the-job training, and ensure safety and work quality standards are met.

  5. CMMS Utilization & Documentation:
Ensure all maintenance records, inspections, and part usage are logged accurately to support auditability and planning.

  6. Compliance & Safety Leadership:
Enforce adherence to safety protocols and compliance with water utility regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field.

  • 5–7 years of experience in mechanical maintenance, with at least 2–3 years working directly with turbines or rotating machinery.

  • Strong understanding of water turbine systems, hydraulic principles, and utility operations.

  • Proficient in reading mechanical schematics and using precision maintenance tools (e.g., alignment lasers, dial indicators).

  • Familiarity with CMMS (e.g., SAP PM, Maximo) and turbine maintenance best practices.

  • Excellent leadership, troubleshooting, and communication skills.

  • Safety certification (e.g., confined space, LOTO) is a plus.
