Tooling Design Engineer

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced and technically proficient Senior Tooling Design Engineer to lead the design, development, and implementation of production tooling solutions. This role is critical in supporting new product introductions, driving tooling innovations, and ensuring optimal manufacturability, quality, and efficiency. The ideal candidate has a strong background in tooling design, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration.

Key Focus Areas:

1. Advanced Tooling Design & Development

    • Lead the design of complex tooling systems: fixtures, jigs, dies, molds, gauges, and custom automation tooling.

    • Ensure all designs meet cost, quality, safety, and manufacturability objectives.

2. Project Leadership & Mentoring

    • Manage tooling projects from concept through production launch.

    • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance across engineering teams.

3. Manufacturing Integration & Process Support

    • Work closely with production, quality, and maintenance teams to troubleshoot tooling and support process optimization.

    • Support tooling trials, validation, and continuous improvement in production environments.

4. Design Validation & Engineering Analysis

    • Perform engineering analysis including GD&T, tolerance stack-up, material selection, and FEA (where applicable).

    • Review and approve technical drawings and BOMs for accuracy and compliance.

5. Innovation & Continuous Improvement

    • Identify opportunities for tooling standardization, cost reduction, and process automation.

    • Champion Lean, Six Sigma, and design-for-manufacturing (DFM/DFA) principles in tooling development.

Core Responsibilities:

    • Design, validate, and implement production tooling using 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, NX, CATIA, Creo).

    • Conduct design reviews with stakeholders and ensure cross-functional input is integrated.

    • Manage multiple tooling projects simultaneously, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met.

    • Interface with external suppliers and vendors to source or fabricate complex tooling components.

    • Ensure tooling designs meet internal and external quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.

    • Contribute to capital planning for new tooling and equipment.

Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Tool Engineering, or a related discipline.

    • 6+ years of hands-on experience in tooling design within a manufacturing environment.

    • Expertise in CAD software and a strong understanding of GD&T, tolerancing, and DFM/DFA.

    • Proven experience in developing tooling for high-volume or precision manufacturing processes (e.g., CNC, injection molding, stamping, die casting).

    • Strong project management skills and the ability to lead cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering.

    • Experience with PDM/PLM systems (e.g., Teamcenter, Windchill).

    • Familiarity with FEA or simulation tools for design validation.

    • Lean Six Sigma Green/Black Belt certification.

    • Prior experience in industries such as automotive, aerospace, medical devices, or consumer electronics.
