Tooling Design Engineer

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are looking for a detail-oriented and motivated Junior Tooling Design Engineer to support the design, development, and maintenance of tools, dies, fixtures, and jigs used in manufacturing. The ideal candidate will contribute to tooling projects from concept through production, working closely with senior engineers, machinists, and production teams.

Key Focus Areas:

1. Tool & Fixture Design Support

    • Assist in designing tools, dies, molds, and fixtures based on product and manufacturing requirements.

    • Prepare 2D and 3D CAD models and technical drawings under supervision.

2. Manufacturing Support

    • Collaborate with production and maintenance teams to troubleshoot and improve tooling performance.

    • Support tooling trials, modifications, and documentation updates.

3. CAD Modeling & Documentation

    • Use CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA) to develop models and assemblies.

    • Maintain accurate drawings, BOMs, and design records.

4. Continuous Improvement

    • Assist in identifying opportunities for tooling standardization, simplification, or cost reduction.

    • Participate in lean activities such as 5S, root cause analysis, and kaizen events.

Core Responsibilities:

    • Support the development of tooling concepts that meet functional, cost, and quality objectives.

    • Prepare technical documentation including assembly drawings, manufacturing instructions, and revision histories.

    • Interface with suppliers and internal teams to source or manufacture tooling components.

    • Conduct dimensional checks and design reviews to ensure manufacturability and performance.

    • Follow safety, quality, and regulatory guidelines for all tooling-related tasks.

Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Tool Design, or related field.

    • Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Creo, etc.).

    • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes: machining, molding, stamping, etc.

    • Strong problem-solving mindset and attention to detail.

    • Good verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Internship or co-op experience in a manufacturing/tooling environment.

    • Familiarity with GD&T, tolerance stack-up, and design for manufacturability (DFM).

    • Exposure to PDM/PLM systems and technical drawing standards (e.g., ISO, ASME Y14.5).
