We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Test & Balance Technician with NEBB or NCI certification (or working toward it) to assist in HVAC system performance testing, air and water balancing, and commissioning activities within a power plant. This role provides hands-on experience in ensuring HVAC systems operate efficiently, reliably, and within design specifications, supporting overall plant performance and safety.
HVAC System Testing & Balancing Support
Assist in measuring, testing, and adjusting airflow, water flow, temperature, and pressure in HVAC systems including chillers, AHUs, pumps, and VAV boxes.
Conduct basic TAB procedures such as airflow measurements using anemometers, flow hood, manometers, and temperature sensors.
Help collect and log data accurately for air distribution and hydronic systems.
Commissioning & Verification Assistance
Support commissioning engineers and senior TAB technicians in verifying HVAC system performance against design criteria and project specifications.
Assist in identifying system imbalances, airflow restrictions, or equipment malfunctions.
Participate in walk-through inspections and functional testing.
Equipment Handling & Calibration
Set up and maintain TAB equipment such as flow hoods, manometers, data loggers, and balancing instruments.
Calibrate and troubleshoot basic measurement devices under supervision.
Maintain equipment logs and ensure tools are properly stored and maintained.
Documentation & Reporting
Record measurements and test results accurately in field reports and balancing sheets.
Assist in preparing TAB reports and documentation required for quality assurance and compliance.
Update system drawings and control points as necessary to reflect balancing outcomes.
Safety & Compliance
Follow safety protocols related to electrical equipment, confined spaces, and working around rotating machinery.
Adhere to NEBB/NCI standards, ASHRAE guidelines, and plant-specific safety policies.
Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and participate in safety training.
Learning & Development
Engage in ongoing training to deepen knowledge of HVAC systems, TAB procedures, and commissioning standards.
Work closely with senior TAB technicians and engineers to develop hands-on skills in complex system balancing.
Prepare for advanced NEBB or NCI certifications with practical experience.
Assist in HVAC air and water system testing and balancing
Support commissioning and functional performance verification
Learn to operate and maintain TAB equipment accurately
Ensure compliance with NEBB/NCI standards and plant safety protocols
Build foundational skills in HVAC system diagnostics and commissioning
Education:
Diploma or Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Technology, or related field
NEBB or NCI TAB certification preferred or in progress
Experience:
0–2 years of experience in HVAC testing, balancing, or commissioning activities (internship or on-the-job training acceptable)
Familiarity with HVAC components such as air handlers, chillers, pumps, and ductwork
Skills:
Basic knowledge of airflow measurement techniques and instrumentation
Ability to follow technical instructions and safety procedures meticulously
Good attention to detail and strong data recording skills
Willingness to learn and work collaboratively within a team
Proficiency in MS Excel and basic reporting tools
