Test Cell Technician – Turbine Performance and Stress Testing

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level Test Cell Technician is responsible for supporting and executing turbine performance and stress testing in a controlled test cell environment. This includes preparing test setups, installing instrumentation, conducting test runs, monitoring engine parameters, and assisting with troubleshooting. The technician ensures testing operations meet quality, safety, and engineering requirements and plays a key role in the evaluation of turbine engine performance under operating and stress conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare turbine engines and components for performance, endurance, and stress testing per test procedures and engineering instructions.

  • Install and calibrate instrumentation, including pressure transducers, thermocouples, strain gauges, accelerometers, and flow meters.

  • Execute test sequences and monitor critical engine parameters (temperature, pressure, vibration, RPM, fuel flow) during live runs.

  • Assist with troubleshooting of test cell issues related to mechanical setup, instrumentation, or DAQ systems.

  • Perform routine maintenance and functional checks of test rigs, engine mounts, cooling systems, and data acquisition equipment.

  • Support real-time data collection and ensure data integrity and accurate logging of test results.

  • Interpret test schematics, wiring diagrams, and instrumentation layouts.

  • Maintain test records, calibration logs, and post-test inspection reports.

  • Enforce safety protocols and participate in risk assessments and pre-test briefings.

  • Collaborate with test engineers and other technicians to improve test setups and efficiency.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Technical Diploma or Degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical, or Mechatronics Engineering.

  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience in a turbine, engine, or rotating equipment test environment.

  • Good understanding of turbine engine systems (fuel, air, exhaust, lubrication) and performance metrics.

  • Proficient in the use of mechanical tools and diagnostic equipment.

  • Familiar with instrumentation systems and data acquisition software (e.g., LabVIEW, DEWESoft, AVL, or similar).

  • Skilled in interpreting test procedures, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills and attention to detail in a high-pressure test environment.

  • Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a cross-functional team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with gas or steam turbine engines (aero-derivative, industrial, or marine).

  • Knowledge of vibration and thermal stress testing methods.

  • Familiarity with safety systems, control panels, and test cell automation.

  • Exposure to OEM testing standards or regulatory compliance (ISO, ASME, etc.).

Working Conditions:

  • Work conducted in high-noise, high-temperature test cell environments with live engine operation.

  • Mandatory use of PPE and strict adherence to safety protocols.

  • May involve shift work, weekends, or extended hours during testing campaigns.

  • Physical activities include lifting, bending, and standing for long durations around test equipment.
