Roles & Responsibilities

The Junior Supervisor – Boiler Safety and Controls supports the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of boiler systems with a particular focus on safety mechanisms, control systems, and instrumentation. This entry-level supervisory role involves monitoring control systems, assisting in safety checks, supporting troubleshooting, and overseeing day-to-day operations under the guidance of senior staff. The role ensures that steam generation systems operate within safe parameters and comply with applicable regulatory standards.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Boiler Control and Safety System Oversight

  • Monitor boiler safety interlocks, pressure switches, flame detectors, low-water cutoffs, and emergency shutdown systems.

  • Assist in configuring and troubleshooting boiler control panels, PLCs, and SCADA/HMI interfaces.

  • Verify the proper operation of safety valves, alarms, and automatic control devices.

2. Routine Safety Inspections

  • Support routine inspection and testing of critical boiler safety devices in accordance with ASME and OSHA standards.

  • Assist in documenting results of safety checks, alarm tests, and shutdown system verifications.

  • Help enforce standard operating procedures and safety protocols during operation and maintenance.

3. System Monitoring and Reporting

  • Monitor system parameters such as pressure, temperature, water levels, and combustion efficiency.

  • Identify and report abnormal operating conditions or safety concerns to senior staff.

  • Maintain accurate logs and digital reports of system status, safety test results, and corrective actions taken.

4. Coordination with Maintenance and Operations

  • Coordinate with maintenance personnel during scheduled safety device testing and control system calibration.

  • Assist in lockout/tagout procedures and safety verifications prior to maintenance work.

  • Support troubleshooting efforts involving instrumentation, sensors, and control loops.

5. Operator Guidance and Shift Supervision

  • Provide technical guidance to boiler operators during shift operations.

  • Ensure operators are aware of control system parameters and safety thresholds.

  • Help with shift changeovers and daily operations meetings regarding boiler performance and safety concerns.


Focus Areas:

  • Safety shutdown systems and interlocks

  • Boiler control systems (e.g., PLC, SCADA, BMS)

  • Alarm testing and safety valve verification

  • Compliance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, NFPA, OSHA

  • Low-water cutoff and flame safeguard systems

  • Boiler logs, digital monitoring, and system documentation


Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation, or Industrial Systems (or equivalent experience)

  • 1–3 years of hands-on experience with boiler operations or mechanical systems

  • Basic understanding of boiler controls, safety devices, and process instrumentation

  • Familiarity with standard safety procedures and compliance practices


Preferred Certifications:

  • Entry-level Boiler Operator License (as per jurisdiction)

  • OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour General Industry Certification

  • Lockout/Tagout and Confined Space Training

  • First Aid/CPR Certification
