The Senior Structural Fitter / Steel Fabricator is responsible for leading the layout, assembly, and fit-up of complex structural steel components and assemblies as per drawings and specifications. The role requires expert-level skill in interpreting detailed drawings, ensuring fabrication quality, guiding junior fitters, and coordinating with welding, QA/QC, and planning teams.
Interpret complex GA, shop, and isometric drawings including detailed weld symbols and fabrication notes.
Lead the layout, marking, cutting, drilling, and fit-up of large and critical structural elements (e.g., trusses, pipe racks, heavy base frames, skids, equipment supports).
Supervise a team of junior fitters and helpers; provide technical guidance and training as needed.
Ensure dimensional accuracy, squareness, alignment, and weld preparations are done to specification.
Coordinate with welders, riggers, inspectors, and supervisors to ensure workflow efficiency and quality.
Identify fabrication challenges and suggest practical on-the-spot solutions.
Conduct in-process inspections before welding; flag and rectify fit-up deviations or misalignments.
Maintain a clean and organized work area with a strong focus on safety and housekeeping.
Support QA/QC during dimensional inspections, fit-up clearances, and NDT readiness.
Assist with erection preparation, lifting plans, and site fit-up activities where required.
Leadership in Fit-Up: Supervise and lead structural assembly tasks for large-scale, critical structures.
Advanced Drawing Interpretation: Work from complex structural and shop drawings with minimal supervision.
Quality Assurance: Maintain tight tolerances, joint quality, and readiness for inspection and welding.
Problem Solving: Proactively address fit-up challenges and provide field-fit solutions when necessary.
Code Awareness: Familiarity with fabrication codes such as AWS D1.1, ASME, or client-specific standards.
Mentorship: Coach and guide less experienced team members to improve team capability.
Workplace Safety: Ensure all work complies with hot work, lifting, and confined space safety protocols.
Education:
ITI / Trade Certificate in Structural Fitting, Fabrication, or Mechanical Trades (mandatory)
Diploma in Mechanical/Structural Engineering (preferred but not mandatory)
Certifications (Preferred):
Basic HSE certifications (e.g., Hot Work, Confined Space Entry, Working at Height)
Welding/fabrication-related training (preferred)
Experience:
8+ years in structural fabrication, including experience with heavy steel structures, preferably in oil & gas, infrastructure, or EPC sectors
Skills:
Strong command of measurement tools, jigs, and fixtures
Ability to lead a fabrication team and maintain daily production targets
Proficiency in fit-up techniques for both bolted and welded assemblies
Sound knowledge of distortion control, tack sequencing, and erection tolerances
Good communication and coordination with multidiscipline teams
