Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level Structural Fitter / Steel Fabricator is responsible for the accurate layout, assembly, and fit-up of structural steel components based on fabrication drawings and specifications. This role requires proficiency in blueprint reading, use of measurement tools, and ensuring the correct alignment and fit of structural assemblies in compliance with quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret fabrication drawings, welding symbols, and tolerances for structural steelwork.

  • Perform accurate layout, marking, drilling, grinding, and fit-up of beams, columns, bracings, base plates, and other steel sections.

  • Assemble steel components using clamps, bolts, and tack welds, ensuring proper alignment and geometry.

  • Use hand tools and power tools including grinders, magnetic drills, gas cutting sets, and levels.

  • Prepare joints for welding or bolting based on structural requirements and welding procedures.

  • Verify dimensional accuracy and squareness of structures before releasing for welding.

  • Coordinate with welders, fabricators, and QC inspectors to maintain workflow and resolve fabrication issues.

  • Comply with project specifications, shop procedures, and safety guidelines during all fabrication activities.

  • Support loading/unloading and temporary bracing or rigging where required.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Structural Fit-Up: Fit beams, columns, trusses, and platforms with precision.

  • Blueprint Reading: Competent in reading GA drawings, shop drawings, and weld symbols.

  • Dimensional Control: Maintain alignment, squareness, and level tolerances.

  • Joint Preparation: Ensure correct fit-up for full penetration welds or bolted connections.

  • Material Handling: Identify and work with structural sections like I-beams, channels, angles, and plates.

  • Quality Standards: Support QA/QC by ensuring work complies with project requirements and tolerances.

  • Safety Adherence: Follow site/workshop HSE protocols, especially during hot work, lifting, and grinding operations.

  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with welders, supervisors, and riggers to execute fabrication efficiently.

    • ITI / Trade Certificate in Fitting, Fabrication, or Mechanical Trades (mandatory)

    • Diploma in Mechanical or Structural Engineering (preferred)

  • Certifications (Preferred):

    • Basic safety training (e.g., hot work permit, working at height)

    • Structural fabrication training from a recognized institute

  • Experience:

    • 3–7 years of experience in structural fabrication, preferably in oil & gas or EPC projects

    • Demonstrated ability to fit complex structures from shop drawings

  • Skills:

    • Strong knowledge of fabrication tools, methods, and steel standards

    • Ability to work independently and supervise helpers if required

    • Familiarity with bolted and welded assemblies

    • Use of tools like spirit levels, squares, plumb bobs, and measuring tapes accurately

    • Basic understanding of weld sequencing and distortion control
