Steam Systems Engineer – Turbine and Heat Recovery Systems

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Steam Systems Engineer will lead the design, analysis, and integration of advanced steam-based propulsion and power generation systems, with a primary focus on steam turbines and heat recovery steam generators (HRSG). The role encompasses the development, optimization, and lifecycle support of steam systems deployed in marine, industrial, and power plant environments.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead the design and engineering of steam turbine systems, including high- and low-pressure turbines, piping, condensers, and auxiliary equipment.

    • Spearhead the design and performance analysis of Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG), including thermal cycle modeling, component sizing, and efficiency optimization.

    • Conduct system-level integration with boilers, heat exchangers, and propulsion/power units in marine or industrial applications.

    • Oversee the preparation of technical specifications, P&IDs, and detailed engineering drawings in compliance with relevant codes (e.g., ASME, API, ABS, ISO).

    • Perform thermal and mechanical analysis (CFD, FEA) to evaluate stress, flow behavior, and thermal efficiency across system components.

    • Provide technical leadership to junior and mid-level engineers, reviewing their work and mentoring them through project phases.

    • Interface with fabricators, vendors, and EPC contractors for component procurement, testing, and commissioning.

    • Support on-site inspections, FAT/SAT, troubleshooting, and performance tuning during installation and commissioning phases.

    • Contribute to the development of operating procedures, maintenance schedules, and root cause analysis documentation.

    • Stay up to date on technological advancements in steam turbine design, energy efficiency, and waste heat recovery techniques.

Key Focus Areas:

    • Steam Turbine Design & Optimization: Multistage turbine performance, rotor dynamics, blade design, and seal systems.

    • Heat Recovery Steam Generation (HRSG): Design integration with gas turbine exhausts, HRSG controls, and heat exchanger performance.

    • Thermodynamic Cycle Analysis: Rankine and combined cycles, cycle efficiency improvements, and heat balance calculations.

    • System Integration: Cross-functional coordination with mechanical, controls, and marine engineering teams.

    • Compliance & Standards: Ensuring adherence to international marine and power plant codes (ASME, ABS, DNV, IEC, etc.).

Qualifications and Skills:

    • Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, or related discipline.

    • 10+ years of experience in steam systems engineering, with at least 5 years in senior-level or lead roles.

    • Proven track record in the design and commissioning of steam turbines and HRSGs.

    • Proficiency in engineering tools such as EBSILON, Thermoflex, AutoPIPE, ANSYS, or similar.

    • Strong leadership and project management capabilities.

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; capable of client-facing discussions and presentations.

Preferred Experience:

    • Experience in marine propulsion systems, waste heat recovery on naval or commercial vessels, or power plant installations.

    • Familiarity with controls and automation aspects of steam systems.

    • Hands-on field experience in commissioning, testing, or maintenance of turbine and HRSG systems.
