Steam System Design Engineer

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Mid-Level Steam System Design Engineer to lead and support the design, analysis, and implementation of industrial steam and condensate systems. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with steam system design, energy efficiency optimization, and technical coordination across multiple disciplines. This role is critical in ensuring that systems are engineered for performance, reliability, safety, and code compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

System Design and Engineering:

  • Design steam generation, distribution, and condensate recovery systems for industrial or commercial facilities.

  • Size and select components such as steam traps, control valves, PRVs, heat exchangers, piping, and instrumentation.

  • Create and review PFDs, P&IDs, isometric drawings, and layout plans using CAD and engineering tools.

  • Perform heat and mass balance calculations, steam load analysis, and pressure drop simulations.

Technical Documentation:

  • Prepare technical specifications, design reports, datasheets, and bill of materials (BoMs).

  • Develop control philosophies, commissioning plans, and equipment schedules.

  • Ensure engineering deliverables are accurate, complete, and aligned with project objectives.

Project Execution:

  • Collaborate with clients, vendors, contractors, and internal project teams to ensure seamless execution.

  • Provide technical support during procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning phases.

  • Review vendor documentation and perform submittal reviews to ensure compliance with specifications.

Compliance and Standards:

  • Ensure all systems conform to applicable codes and standards such as ASME B31.1, B31.3, API, and local pressure vessel regulations.

  • Support compliance with workplace and site-specific safety standards, especially for high-pressure and high-temperature systems.

Troubleshooting and Optimization:

  • Analyze and troubleshoot operational issues in existing steam and condensate systems.

  • Identify opportunities for energy recovery, thermal optimization, and steam loss reduction.

  • Conduct or support steam audits, system walkdowns, and root cause analyses.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Additional certification in thermal systems, piping design, or energy management is a plus.

Experience:

  • 3–7 years of relevant experience in steam and condensate system design.

  • Experience in industrial sectors such as oil & gas, food & beverage, power, chemical, or pharmaceuticals preferred.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency with design tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, or plant design software.

  • Experience with steam system modeling tools (e.g., Pipe-Flo, AFT Arrow/Fathom, EBS, or SteamCalc).

  • Good understanding of insulation standards, trap selection, and condensate recovery practices.

  • Familiarity with control systems integration and SCADA interface is a plus.

Key Competencies:

  • Strong analytical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication.

  • Ability to work independently and lead design tasks within multidisciplinary project teams.

  • Detail-oriented with a strong sense of engineering best practices and safety.

  • Time management and task prioritization in fast-paced project environments.
