Steam System Design Engineer

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Steam System Design Engineer to support the design, analysis, and commissioning of steam and condensate systems used in industrial and utility applications. This entry-level role is ideal for engineering graduates or early-career professionals who are looking to gain experience in thermal systems, energy efficiency, and piping network design. The candidate will work under the supervision of senior engineers and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, efficient, and code-compliant designs.

Key Responsibilities:

System Design Support:

  • Assist in the design of steam distribution systems, condensate return systems, and pressure reducing stations.

  • Support layout planning and development of P&IDs and piping isometrics using CAD tools.

  • Perform basic thermal and fluid flow calculations such as steam load estimation, pressure drop, and pipe sizing.

Technical Analysis and Documentation:

  • Conduct material selection and specification of steam piping, valves, traps, strainers, heat exchangers, and related components.

  • Assist in thermal efficiency evaluations and energy conservation assessments.

  • Support the preparation of technical documentation including datasheets, equipment specifications, and system design reports.

Project Support:

  • Participate in site surveys and data collection for new or retrofit steam system projects.

  • Collaborate with procurement, construction, and commissioning teams to ensure proper equipment selection and installation.

  • Help prepare inspection and testing plans (ITPs) for steam and condensate systems.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Support compliance with applicable design codes and standards (e.g., ASME B31.1, B31.3, API, ISO).

  • Learn and follow relevant safety guidelines and procedures for high-pressure steam systems.

Learning and Development:

  • Develop a working knowledge of steam generation, distribution, and condensate recovery systems.

  • Receive training and mentorship in engineering best practices, system troubleshooting, and steam energy audits.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Relevant coursework in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, or piping systems preferred.

Experience:

  • 0–2 years of experience (internship/co-op experience in utility systems or process plants is a plus).

  • Familiarity with steam system components and operation is desirable.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit).

  • Basic knowledge of fluid flow and heat transfer calculations (manual or using tools like PipeFlo, AFT Fathom, or Excel).

  • Familiarity with industry standards such as ASME, ANSI, and API is an advantage.

Key Competencies:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Willingness to learn and take initiative.

  • High attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality.

Work Environment:

  • Office-based role with occasional visits to manufacturing plants, utility rooms, or construction sites.

  • Use of PPE is required when working on-site around live steam systems.

  • May involve physical inspections in elevated or confined areas.
