The Junior Steam Plant Operator supports the operation, monitoring, and routine maintenance of marine steam systems, particularly boilers, auxiliary steam lines, and associated control equipment. Working under the supervision of licensed engineers or senior operators aboard commercial or naval vessels, this entry-level role ensures safe and efficient boiler operation in accordance with shipboard procedures, safety regulations, and Class society standards.
Assist with the startup, operation, and shutdown of marine boilers and steam plant equipment
Monitor and record boiler parameters such as steam pressure, water level, fuel consumption, and flue gas temperatures
Perform routine water chemistry checks (pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen) and assist with treatment system adjustments
Respond to alarms or abnormal readings by notifying supervisors and initiating basic corrective actions
Help maintain boiler room equipment, including pumps, valves, gauges, burners, and feedwater systems
Clean and lubricate auxiliary machinery and ensure safe working conditions within the boiler room
Follow procedures for watchstanding, equipment logging, and preventive maintenance schedules
Assist in blowdown operations, soot blowing, and maintaining cleanliness of boiler tubes and combustion areas
Comply with marine safety protocols, confined space procedures, and emergency shutdown drills
Support troubleshooting efforts and learn fault isolation techniques for steam system equipment
Real-time monitoring and support of boiler and steam plant operations
Learning safe and effective watchstanding practices
Basic maintenance and recordkeeping in the engine room environment
Development of skills for marine boiler control and system diagnostics
Education:
High school diploma or technical/vocational school certificate (marine engineering or mechanical systems preferred)
Completion of a marine engineering cadet program or boiler operations training is a plus
Experience:
0–2 years of experience operating marine or industrial steam systems (training or sea time preferred)
Technical Skills:
Basic understanding of steam generation principles, marine boiler systems, and engine room operations
Familiarity with gauge reading, valve operations, fuel systems, and boiler safety devices
Ability to use hand tools and assist with equipment maintenance
Soft Skills:
Willingness to learn in a structured, safety-critical environment
Good communication and teamwork in multi-shift operations
Physically fit for shipboard work in hot, enclosed spaces
Alertness and responsibility while on watch duty
