The Mid-Level Steam Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient operation and maintenance of industrial steam generation and distribution systems, including high- and low-pressure boilers, feedwater equipment, and auxiliary utilities. This role monitors system performance, performs routine maintenance, and ensures compliance with plant safety standards and regulatory requirements.
Operate and monitor boilers, feedwater systems, deaerators, condensate return systems, and steam traps.
Maintain required pressure, temperature, and flow setpoints to ensure stable plant operation.
Use HMI/SCADA systems to track and control steam plant operations and respond to alarms.
Perform routine maintenance tasks including burner inspection, flame scanner checks, valve maintenance, and blowdowns.
Troubleshoot steam, water, and fuel system issues to restore equipment to full functionality.
Support repairs and component replacements in pumps, piping, gauges, and actuators.
Monitor and maintain proper boiler water chemistry, including testing and chemical dosing.
Assist with optimizing blowdown and condensate return for energy and water efficiency.
Document daily water treatment activities and track performance indicators.
Ensure adherence to safety procedures, including LOTO, confined space entry, and PPE use.
Perform and document safety tests on equipment such as pressure relief valves, alarms, and interlocks.
Support regulatory and internal audits with accurate logkeeping and system performance data.
Work with maintenance, production, and utilities teams to coordinate steam supply needs.
Assist in mentoring junior operators and onboarding new personnel.
Participate in improvement projects related to steam system reliability and energy use.
Daily operation and monitoring of boiler systems

Safety compliance and documentation accuracy
High school diploma or GED required
Technical diploma or completion of a certified boiler operator training program preferred
Valid Boiler Operator License (state/city) required or in process
3–6 years of experience in steam plant or industrial boiler operations
Experience with food manufacturing, pharma, or other regulated industries preferred
Working knowledge of boiler systems, BMS, burners, and steam controls
Familiarity with instrumentation, piping, and water treatment processes
Proficiency with digital control panels, SCADA systems, and logkeeping tools
Attention to detail and safety-first mindset
Strong troubleshooting and decision-making skills
Good communication and teamwork with cross-functional groups
