The Junior Steam Plant Operator supports the daily operation and basic maintenance of steam generation and distribution systems, including boilers, feedwater systems, and auxiliary equipment. Under the guidance of senior operators or supervisors, this role assists with monitoring equipment, recording operational data, and performing entry-level tasks necessary for safe and compliant steam plant performance.
Assist with monitoring steam plant equipment, including boilers, pumps, and condensate return systems.
Record key operational data such as temperatures, pressures, and fuel usage.
Perform routine visual inspections to detect abnormal conditions or leaks.
Help perform boiler blowdowns, water level checks, and burner adjustments under supervision.
Assist with boiler startups, shutdowns, and safety system checks.
Maintain cleanliness and organization in boiler rooms and utility areas.
Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), lockout/tagout (LOTO), and other safety protocols.
Support safety inspections and testing of safety devices like relief valves and alarms.
Begin familiarization with regulatory requirements such as OSHA, ASME, and local codes.
Participate in on-the-job training focused on boiler operations, water treatment, and system troubleshooting.
Learn to interpret gauges, control panels, and SCADA/HMI systems.
Study steam plant schematics, P&IDs, and equipment manuals to build technical knowledge.

High school diploma or GED required
Trade school, technical training, or enrollment in a boiler operator program a plus
0–2 years of experience in mechanical maintenance, utility systems, or plant operations
Exposure to industrial steam systems preferred but not required
Basic mechanical aptitude (tools, piping, valves)
Willingness to learn industrial utility equipment and controls
Familiarity with basic computer/data entry for logbooks and checklists
High attention to safety and detail
Dependable, trainable, and team-oriented
Ability to follow procedures and take direction from senior staff
