Job Description: Sheet Metal Designer

Overview of the Role

The Sheet Metal Designer plays a crucial role in the design and development of sheet metal components and assemblies. This senior-level position requires a deep understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes, materials, and design principles. The ideal candidate will leverage their expertise to create innovative designs that meet both functional and aesthetic requirements while ensuring manufacturability and cost-effectiveness. The role demands collaboration with cross-functional teams, including engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance, to deliver high-quality products that align with industry standards and customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities

    • Lead the design and development of complex sheet metal components and assemblies for various projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and specifications.
    • Create detailed engineering drawings, models, and specifications using advanced CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar), with a focus on sheet metal fabrication techniques.
    • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and production teams to evaluate design feasibility, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness of sheet metal components.
    • Analyze and select appropriate materials and fabrication processes for sheet metal, including cutting, bending, forming, and welding techniques.
    • Conduct thorough design reviews and provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior designers and engineers, promoting best practices in sheet metal design.
    • Perform advanced stress analysis and calculations to ensure the structural integrity and performance of sheet metal designs, utilizing tools such as finite element analysis (FEA) as needed.
    • Oversee the preparation and approval of design documentation, including specifications, change orders, and standard operating procedures (SOPs), ensuring accuracy and compliance.
    • Stay abreast of industry trends, materials, and advancements in fabrication technologies, integrating innovative solutions into the design process to maintain a competitive edge.
    • Champion the implementation of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and reduce waste in sheet metal fabrication processes.
    • Collaborate closely with quality assurance teams to ensure that sheet metal components meet required standards, specifications, and quality assurance processes.
    • Lead technical presentations and discussions with stakeholders, effectively communicating complex design concepts and project outcomes.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field; a Master’s degree is a plus.
    • Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in sheet metal design, preferably in manufacturing or construction industries.
    • Expert proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor) with a focus on advanced sheet metal design features.
    • Extensive knowledge of sheet metal fabrication processes, materials, and industry standards (e.g., AWS, ISO).
    • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with a strong attention to detail.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for articulating complex design concepts and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
    • Proven ability to manage multiple high-stakes projects simultaneously while delivering high-quality results on time.
    • Experience in mentoring and developing talent within design teams is highly preferred.

    Skills:

    • Advanced expertise in sheet metal design principles, methodologies, and technologies.

    • Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings and specifications.

    • Strong understanding of materials and their properties as they relate to sheet metal fabrication.

    • Ability to perform complex calculations for bend allowances, material thickness, and tolerances.

    • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

    • Creative problem-solving abilities with a proactive approach to overcoming design challenges.

    • Ability to influence and lead design initiatives, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation.

    • The position may require occasional travel to fabrication sites or supplier locations.

    • May involve working in a manufacturing environment, adhering to strict safety protocols and regulations.
