Senior Mechanical Engineer – Power Plant

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

As a Junior Mechanical Engineer – Power Plant, you will support the design, operation, maintenance, and reliability of mechanical systems in a thermal or combined-cycle power plant. Under close supervision, you’ll gain hands-on experience across rotating and static equipment—turbines, boilers/HRSGs, pumps, heat exchangers—and help ensure safe, efficient plant performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Technical Support & Drafting

    • Assist in preparing basic mechanical drawings, datasheets, and piping layouts for plant systems.

    • Update and maintain equipment design files, P&IDs, and GA drawings.

  2. Routine Inspections & Data Collection

    • Participate in field rounds to inspect turbines, pumps, valves, and heat exchangers for leaks, vibration, and abnormal noise.

    • Record operating parameters (temperatures, pressures, flow rates) and log data in CMMS.

  3. Maintenance & Troubleshooting Assistance

    • Support preventive-maintenance activities: lubrication, filter changes, alignment checks, and minor repairs under guidance.

    • Help collect failure data and assist in basic root-cause analysis for equipment issues.

  4. Performance Monitoring & Reporting

    • Compile weekly reports on equipment health, downtime incidents, and maintenance metrics.

    • Assist in analyzing simple trends (e.g., vibration spikes, temperature rises) to flag potential concerns.

  5. Project & Modification Support

    • Aid senior engineers in small-scale projects (e.g., pump replacements, piping modifications) by coordinating materials and tracking progress.

    • Liaise with vendors to gather technical specifications and ensure compliance with plant standards.

  6. Safety & Compliance

    • Follow all HSE protocols (LOTO, confined-space entry, PPE) during inspection and maintenance tasks.

    • Ensure work adheres to relevant codes and site procedures.

Key Focus Areas:

🔍 Learning & Skill Development

  • Build foundational knowledge of steam/gas turbine cycles, boiler operation, and auxiliary systems through on-the-job training.

📋 Data Accuracy & Documentation

  • Focus on precise recording of operating and maintenance data to support reliability decisions.

🛠️ Hands-On Mechanical Practices

  • Develop proficiency with alignment tools, basic hand-tools, and measurement instruments under mentorship.

🚀 Reliability Support

  • Contribute to simple condition-monitoring tasks (visual checks, basic vibration readings) and learn to interpret early warning signs.

🤝 Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering teams to understand plant processes and support integrated solutions.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline

  • Experience: 0–2 years (internships or co-op experience in power-plant or rotating equipment maintenance a plus)

  • Certifications: Basic safety and permit training (e.g., confined-space, LOTO) preferred

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong eagerness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced industrial environment

  • Basic understanding of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics

  • Good communication, teamwork, and organization skills

  • Familiarity with MS Office and willingness to learn CMMS tools

  • Attention to detail and commitment to safety

Working Conditions:

  • On-site role with regular field work in turbine halls, boiler rooms, and mechanical workshops

  • May involve shift rotations, extended hours during outages, and PPE use at all times

  • Exposure to heat, noise, and moving equipment; strict adherence to safety protocols required
