Job Title: Mechanical Engineer – HVAC Design

Summary:

The Mechanical Engineer – HVAC Design (Mid-Level) plays a critical role in the design, analysis, and documentation of HVAC systems for commercial, industrial, or institutional applications. This role involves leading portions of HVAC design projects, performing detailed calculations, selecting equipment, and ensuring systems meet energy, performance, and code requirements. The engineer collaborates cross-functionally and supports design reviews, site coordination, and technical mentoring of junior staff.

Key Responsibilities:

System Design & Analysis

  • Design HVAC systems including ductwork, chilled/hot water piping, ventilation, and air distribution layouts.

  • Perform detailed heating and cooling load calculations using industry-standard software.

  • Select HVAC equipment (AHUs, chillers, VRF systems, fans, VAVs, etc.) based on performance specs and project needs.

  • Develop control strategies and sequences of operation in coordination with controls engineers.

Project Documentation

  • Prepare mechanical design drawings, specifications, and construction documents using AutoCAD and Revit.

  • Create equipment schedules, riser diagrams, and BOMs aligned with project milestones.

  • Ensure all documentation complies with applicable codes and client requirements.

Code Compliance & Quality

  • Ensure HVAC systems conform to local and international codes (ASHRAE, IMC, SMACNA, NFPA, LEED).

  • Conduct system analysis for ventilation effectiveness, energy efficiency, and thermal comfort compliance (ASHRAE 55/62.1).

  • Participate in QA/QC reviews, peer reviews, and internal design audits.

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Coordinate with structural, electrical, plumbing, and controls teams to integrate HVAC designs into multi-disciplinary projects.

  • Work with project managers to define scopes, schedules, and cost estimates for HVAC design packages.

  • Support field teams with RFI responses and site-related HVAC design clarifications.

Mentorship & Development

  • Provide guidance to junior engineers or interns on HVAC calculations, drafting standards, and engineering principles.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement in design standards, templates, and workflows.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Mechanical design and performance analysis of HVAC systems

  • Equipment selection and sizing for high-efficiency HVAC designs

  • Code-compliant documentation and system layout development

  • Multi-disciplinary project coordination and delivery

  • Technical mentoring and process improvement

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (required)

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or working toward PE licensure (preferred)

Experience:

  • 3–6 years of HVAC design experience in consulting, construction, or manufacturing environments

  • Demonstrated involvement in multiple commercial or industrial HVAC projects

Software & Tools:

  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Revit, and HVAC design tools (Carrier HAP, Trane TRACE, eQuest)

  • Familiarity with Navisworks, Bluebeam, and BIM coordination tools is a plus

  • Experience with energy modeling and sustainability certifications (LEED, WELL) is advantageous

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong understanding of fluid flow, psychrometrics, thermodynamics, and HVAC controls

  • Ability to manage design packages and deliverables within project timelines

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and communication skills

  • Collaborative mindset with an ability to engage across disciplines and with clients
