The Mid-Level Mechanical Engineer – Boiler Systems is responsible for the design, analysis, optimization, and reliability of steam and boiler systems used in industrial, utility, or water treatment environments. The role involves direct involvement in equipment selection, system design per applicable codes (e.g., ASME Section I, B31.1), performance evaluations, and support for operations and maintenance.
This position requires strong problem-solving skills and the ability to lead medium-sized projects with minimal supervision. The engineer will collaborate with vendors, operations teams, and regulatory stakeholders to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant boiler system performance.
Design and analyze pressure parts (e.g., drums, tubes, headers) and supporting mechanical systems according to ASME Section I, B31.1, and NBIC.
Develop specifications and review vendor documents for boilers, economizers, burners, valves, and pumps.
Conduct thermal performance calculations to assess efficiency, load management, and fuel utilization.
Provide engineering support for boiler operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of issues like tube leaks, fouling, or corrosion.
Prepare technical drawings, material take-offs, P&IDs, and BOQs for boiler projects.
Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for boiler-related failures and propose corrective actions.
Participate in shutdown planning, retrofits, and commissioning of boiler systems.
Interface with inspectors and code authorities for pressure vessel compliance.
Maintain technical documentation, including design files, inspection reports, and repair records.
Code Compliance and Design Standards
Apply and interpret ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (Section I) and B31.1 Power Piping Code for new designs and modifications.
Boiler Performance & Efficiency
Conduct system evaluations to recommend improvements in combustion control, heat recovery, and steam distribution.
Reliability and Failure Prevention
Lead or support fitness-for-service evaluations, particularly for aging systems prone to fatigue, creep, or corrosion.
Project Engineering & Vendor Management
Oversee boiler packages from specification through installation, including vendor drawing reviews and field coordination.
Thermal Integration with Plant Systems
Ensure effective integration with steam turbines, heat exchangers, feedwater systems, and plant control systems.
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master’s degree preferred).
4–8 years of experience in boiler systems engineering or industrial utility plants.
Working knowledge of ASME Section I, B31.1, and NBIC requirements.
Proficiency in engineering tools like PV Elite, AutoPIPE, ANSYS, or equivalent.
Familiarity with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit for mechanical design.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with field inspections, NDE, and quality control documentation is a plus.
