Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level SIS Supervisor is responsible for supervising the maintenance, testing, and reliability of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) used to protect critical power plant processes. The role ensures compliance with SIL (Safety Integrity Level) requirements and supports the overall safety lifecycle as per IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 standards. The position requires hands-on technical skills, familiarity with safety logic controllers, and coordination of a small technical team.

Key Focus Areas:

  • SIL Compliance & Testing – Execute and document periodic proof testing, partial stroke testing, and logic solver validation to maintain SIL compliance.

  • Maintenance Leadership – Supervise field teams performing SIS loop checks, calibrations, and final element verifications.

  • SIS Event Monitoring & Troubleshooting – Identify and resolve issues in ESD (Emergency Shutdown) systems, fire & gas detection systems, and related safety instrumented functions.

  • Shutdown & Startup Safety Checks – Lead SIS testing during plant turnarounds, start-ups, and shutdowns to ensure operational safety.

  • Documentation & Audit Readiness – Maintain updated SIS documentation including cause & effect matrices, test procedures, and compliance reports.

  • Interface with HSE & Automation Teams – Collaborate with safety engineers and DCS/PLC teams to ensure correct SIS functionality and integration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise technicians in executing preventive and corrective maintenance of SIS loops and logic solvers.

  • Validate field device functionality (sensors, transmitters, actuators) tied to safety systems.

  • Participate in Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPs) and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessments.

  • Maintain up-to-date loop diagrams, functional safety test reports, and failure records.

  • Support configuration and diagnostics of safety PLCs (e.g., Triconex, HIMA, Emerson DeltaV SIS).

  • Assist in root cause analysis (RCA) for SIS-related events or spurious trips.

  • Monitor compliance with IEC 61511 lifecycle stages, especially testing, maintenance, and operation phases.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Instrumentation, Electronics, or Control Systems Engineering.

  • 4–7 years of hands-on experience in SIS maintenance in power generation, oil & gas, or industrial automation.

  • Strong understanding of SIL levels, proof test intervals, and safety lifecycle concepts.

  • Proficiency in using safety logic solvers and test equipment.

  • Familiarity with relevant safety standards: IEC 61508, IEC 61511.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong supervisory and team coordination skills.

  • Analytical thinking and advanced troubleshooting abilities.

  • Effective technical communication and documentation skills.

  • Solid knowledge of instrumentation safety design and control logic.

  • High commitment to safety culture and regulatory compliance.
