Rotating Equipment Engineer

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Junior Rotating Equipment Engineer assists in the design, operation, maintenance, and reliability of rotating machinery—such as turbines, pumps, compressors, and gearboxes. Under close supervision, you’ll develop foundational technical skills, support troubleshooting, and contribute to optimization projects that keep critical equipment running safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Technical Support & Inspection

    • Participate in mechanical inspections of rotating equipment: visual checks, alignment readings, vibration sampling, and oil analysis.

    • Assist in preparing inspection reports, non‐conformance notices, and basic condition assessments.

  2. Troubleshooting & Root-Cause Analysis

    • Help investigate equipment anomalies (noise, vibration, temperature, leakage) and collect data for senior engineers.

    • Support failure‐mode analysis by gathering operational logs, inspection findings, and maintenance history.

  3. Maintenance & Reliability Projects

    • Contribute to preventive and predictive maintenance tasks: shaft alignment, balancing, bearing replacements, seal inspections.

    • Assist in small‐scale reliability improvement initiatives (e.g., coupling upgrades, lubrication system enhancements).

  4. Data Collection & Analysis

    • Execute routine condition‐monitoring routes using handheld analyzers or portable sensors.

    • Record vibration spectra, thermography images, and oil sample data in the CMMS or reliability database.

  5. Design & Modification Support

    • Aid in preparing basic mechanical drawings, datasheets, and P&IDs for rotating equipment upgrades or retrofits.

    • Coordinate with vendors to procure spare parts, seals, couplings, and other rotating‐equipment components.

  6. Documentation & Compliance

    • Maintain up-to-date equipment files, maintenance records, and vendor manuals.

    • Ensure compliance with safety permits (LOTO, confined space) and industry standards (API, ISO).

  7. Collaboration & Learning

    • Work alongside operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to understand equipment performance issues.

    • Attend technical training sessions, safety briefings, and mentoring meetings to build expertise.

Key Focus Areas:

⚙️ Condition Monitoring & Diagnostics

  • Learn to collect and interpret vibration, thermography, and oil analysis data to identify early signs of mechanical distress.

📋 Maintenance Execution & Support

  • Focus on proper execution of alignment, balancing, and lubrication practices to prevent unplanned downtime.

🛠️ Technical Skill Development

  • Build proficiency with alignment tools, balancing machines, laser shaft alignment systems, and predictive‐maintenance software.

🔄 Reliability & Continuous Improvement

  • Contribute to small‐scale projects aimed at reducing failure rates, improving MTBF, and optimizing maintenance intervals.

🛡️ Safety & Standards Compliance

  • Embed a safety‐first mindset in all field activities, adhering to permit‐to‐work systems and rotating‐equipment best practices.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline

  • Experience: 0–2 years in mechanical or rotating‐equipment maintenance/engineering (internship or entry‐level)

  • Certifications: Basic knowledge of API (610, 614) or ISO 10816 standards (beneficial)

Skills & Competencies:

  • Fundamental understanding of rotating machinery components and failure modes

  • Hands‐on aptitude with mechanical tools and measuring instruments

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail in data collection

  • Good communication, teamwork, and willingness to learn

  • Basic proficiency with CMMS systems and Microsoft Office

Working Conditions:

  • Onsite role in industrial or plant environments; exposure to noise, heat, and moving equipment

  • May require shift work and participation in outage/turnaround activities

  • Mandatory use of PPE and strict adherence to safety protocols
