Reliability Manager – Turbine and BOP

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Reliability Manager – Turbine and BOP is responsible for developing and implementing reliability strategies to maximize equipment uptime and lifecycle performance of gas turbines, steam turbines, and balance of plant (BOP) equipment. This includes condition monitoring, failure analysis, maintenance optimization, and risk-based inspection planning. The manager serves as the site’s subject matter expert on rotating equipment reliability and drives cross-functional collaboration to achieve asset integrity and performance goals.

Key Responsibilities:

📈 Reliability Strategy & Program Development

  • Lead the development and execution of the plant’s reliability strategy for turbines and BOP systems (e.g., pumps, heat exchangers, condensers, HRSGs, compressors, valves).

  • Implement predictive and proactive maintenance programs based on condition monitoring and risk-based techniques.

  • Establish asset criticality rankings and develop equipment-specific reliability improvement plans.

🛠️ Condition Monitoring & Diagnostics

  • Oversee vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, ultrasonic testing, and other CBM techniques.

  • Manage real-time monitoring tools (e.g., PI System, APM, AMS, System 1) for anomaly detection and early warning alerts.

  • Coordinate remote diagnostics with OEM or centralized monitoring centers as needed.

⚙️ Failure Analysis & Root Cause Investigation

  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) of chronic issues, forced outages, and turbine trip events.

  • Collaborate with OEMs, metallurgy labs, and field teams to determine failure mechanisms and corrective actions.

  • Track and close corrective and preventive actions through a structured RCA system.

🔄 Maintenance Optimization

  • Drive continuous improvement of PM (preventive maintenance) and PdM (predictive maintenance) plans using data analytics.

  • Evaluate and optimize spares management for critical equipment to reduce downtime risks.

  • Interface with planning teams to schedule reliability-driven maintenance tasks during outages or turnarounds.

💡 Performance and Risk Management

  • Track reliability KPIs (e.g., Mean Time Between Failures - MTBF, Mean Time To Repair - MTTR, Forced Outage Rate - FOR).

  • Perform reliability risk assessments (FMEA, RCM) for turbines and major BOP systems.

  • Support long-term maintenance strategies including life extension, component replacement, and asset obsolescence planning.

🧾 Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain reliability logs, inspection records, and asset health reports for turbines and BOP equipment.

  • Ensure compliance with OEM recommendations, regulatory standards, and internal reliability procedures.

  • Contribute to audit readiness and insurance inspections related to equipment integrity.

👥 Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Mentor reliability engineers, analysts, and condition monitoring technicians.

  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, engineering, and OEM support teams to align reliability goals with production targets.

  • Conduct regular reviews with senior leadership to communicate risk areas and improvement initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Reliability Engineering, or equivalent

    • CMRP (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional) or CRE (Certified Reliability Engineer) preferred

  • Experience:

    • 8–15 years of experience in rotating equipment reliability, with focus on turbine and BOP systems

    • Proven track record in leading reliability programs in a power plant, refinery, or heavy industrial facility

    • Hands-on experience with condition monitoring and root cause analysis techniques

Technical Competencies:

  • In-depth knowledge of gas and steam turbines (GE, Siemens, MHI, Alstom, etc.) and auxiliary BOP systems

  • Proficiency in diagnostic tools (vibration analyzers, thermography cameras, oil labs, etc.)

  • Familiarity with reliability software: PI System, SAP PM, Maximo, Meridium, Bentley, or similar platforms

  • Understanding of industry standards: API 610/617/670, ASME PTC, ISO 9001/55000

Soft Skills & Leadership Competencies:

  • Analytical mindset with strong data interpretation and decision-making skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills across multi-disciplinary teams

  • Ability to lead change management and drive a reliability-focused culture

  • Proactive and collaborative problem-solver, focused on long-term asset integrity
