Refrigeration Engineer – Marine Chillers and Heat Exchangers

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level Refrigeration Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, and technical support of marine refrigeration systems, including chillers, condensers, evaporators, and heat exchangers used in shipboard HVAC, cooling water systems, and cargo refrigeration. This role involves engineering development, system integration, and compliance with classification society and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Design and optimize marine refrigeration systems, including chilled water loops, refrigerant piping, expansion valves, and heat exchanger networks.

    • Perform heat load calculations, thermodynamic analysis, and component sizing for refrigeration cycles (vapor compression, absorption, etc.).

    • Select and specify chillers, compressors, condensers, plate/shell-and-tube heat exchangers, and controls suited for marine environments.

    • Develop and review P&IDs, 3D models, equipment layouts, and interface documentation for shipyard installation and fabrication.

    • Evaluate performance and efficiency of existing systems and propose improvements for energy savings, weight reduction, and space optimization.

    • Ensure system designs comply with marine classification societies (ABS, DNV, BV) and environmental regulations (IMO MARPOL Annex VI, F-gas directives).

    • Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, and automation teams for controls integration, instrumentation, and system start-up procedures.

    • Support FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing), commissioning, and troubleshooting activities during vessel construction or retrofit.

    • Prepare technical reports, engineering calculations, O&M manuals, and documentation for client and regulatory approval.

    • Mentor junior engineers and collaborate with vendors, shipyards, and third-party inspectors.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. System Design and Performance Optimization
    – Engineer reliable and efficient refrigeration systems tailored for variable shipboard conditions and operating loads.

  2. Marine Equipment Integration
    – Ensure compact, robust design of cooling and heat exchange systems within space-constrained marine engine rooms and HVAC zones.

  3. Compliance and Safety
    – Maintain full regulatory compliance for refrigerants, pressure systems, ventilation requirements, and environmental protection.

  4. Cross-Functional Coordination
    – Work closely with project managers, structural designers, and automation engineers to deliver fully integrated refrigeration solutions.

Qualifications and Skills:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or Refrigeration Technology.

    • 3–6 years of relevant experience in marine, offshore, or industrial refrigeration and thermal systems.

    • Solid understanding of refrigeration cycles, heat exchanger theory, and system thermodynamics.

    • Proficient in AutoCAD, Revit, or 3D modeling tools; exposure to CAE software (e.g., HTRI, Aspen HYSYS, or EES) is preferred.

    • Familiarity with marine chillers, compressors, expansion valves, condensers, and air/fluid heat exchangers.

    • Working knowledge of IMO, ABS, DNV, and USCG regulations for refrigeration and HVAC equipment.

    • Strong analytical, communication, and documentation skills.

Preferred:

    • Experience with natural refrigerants (e.g., ammonia, CO₂) or low-GWP systems.

    • Prior involvement in retrofit, refit, or green retrofit marine HVAC/R projects.

    • Understanding of control systems integration (PLC/BMS/SCADA) in refrigeration systems.

    • Experience supporting cargo refrigeration, galley cooling, or machinery cooling applications on ships or platforms.
