The Junior Refrigerant Handling Supervisor supports the safe handling, charging, recovery, and monitoring of refrigerants—specifically R-1234yf and CO₂ (R-744)—within automotive HVAC and thermal testing environments. This role works under the direction of senior technicians or engineers and plays a critical role in executing standardized procedures in test labs and vehicle applications. The position involves hands-on refrigerant service tasks, equipment preparation, leak detection, and compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in refrigerant charging and recovery procedures for test benches and vehicle HVAC systems using R-1234yf and CO₂ refrigerants.
Set up and operate refrigerant service equipment (vacuum pumps, charging stations, leak detectors, manifolds) in accordance with OEM and regulatory guidelines.
Support basic troubleshooting of A/C circuits, identifying leaks, improper charge levels, or pressure anomalies under supervision.
Monitor pressure, temperature, and mass flow data using gauges and sensors; ensure systems are functioning within expected parameters.
Document refrigerant usage, recovery quantities, and system status in alignment with EPA, SAE J standards, and internal protocols.
Maintain organization and cleanliness of refrigerant handling stations, ensuring equipment calibration and proper storage of cylinders.
Assist senior team members in the implementation of safe practices during high-pressure CO₂ system operations.
Learn and follow proper procedures for emergency response in case of refrigerant release or exposure.
Key Focus Areas:
Hands-on support in refrigerant charging, recovery, and leak detection
Operation and maintenance of R-1234yf and CO₂ service equipment
Data recording and system monitoring during HVAC testing
Safety and compliance with environmental regulations
Collaboration with technicians and test engineers
Foundational training in refrigerant thermodynamics and handling protocols
Qualifications & Skills:
Education:
High school diploma or technical certificate required
Associate degree in HVAC Technology, Automotive Systems, or related field preferred
EPA 609 Certification (MVAC) required or must be obtained within 3 months of hire
Experience:
0–2 years of experience in HVAC service, refrigerant handling, or vehicle A/C systems
Experience with R-1234yf or CO₂ systems a strong plus but not required
Technical Skills:
Familiarity with refrigerant service tools and basic HVAC cycle knowledge
Understanding of system pressure, charge levels, and leak testing procedures
Ability to follow detailed safety and service procedures
Soft Skills:
High attention to safety and regulatory compliance
Willingness to learn and follow direction from senior staff
Good documentation and communication skills
Comfortable working in test labs, vehicle bays, and around high-pressure systems
