Quality Assurance Manager – Marine Turbine Fabrication and Testing

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Quality Assurance Manager for Marine Turbine Fabrication and Testing is responsible for establishing, implementing, and maintaining the quality management system (QMS) across all phases of turbine component manufacturing, assembly, and performance testing. This role ensures all products meet rigorous marine and defense quality standards, including compliance with ABS, DNV, ISO, and OEM technical requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead and oversee the QA function for fabrication and testing of marine gas and steam turbines and associated components (rotors, casings, blades, shafts, nozzles, etc.).

    • Develop and enforce quality plans, inspection protocols, and documentation processes from raw material intake to final test and shipment.

    • Supervise quality inspection teams during dimensional inspections, non-destructive testing (NDT), weld qualifications, and material traceability audits.

    • Ensure compliance with regulatory and classification society requirements (ABS, DNV, USCG, Lloyd’s Register, MIL-STD, etc.).

    • Monitor and analyze quality metrics (e.g., first-pass yield, NCRs, rework rates) to identify trends and root causes.

    • Drive continuous improvement through Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA), FMEAs, and quality process audits.

    • Oversee quality during factory acceptance testing (FAT), hydrostatic tests, performance trials, and final run-in procedures.

    • Interface with external inspectors, marine surveyors, OEM auditors, and defense QA representatives.

    • Maintain and improve the QMS in accordance with ISO 9001, AS9100, or customer-specific standards.

    • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and testing departments to integrate quality assurance into all project phases.

Key Focus Areas:

    • QA Oversight for Marine Turbine Fabrication (Machining, Welding, Assembly)

    • Quality Management in Final Testing (FAT, Hydrostatic, Flow, Vibration Testing)

    • Marine and Defense Compliance (ABS, DNV, NAVSEA, MIL-STD)

    • NDT and Metallurgical Verification (UT, RT, PT, MT, PMI, Hardness Testing)

    • Process Control, Traceability, and Continuous Improvement

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Quality Engineering, or related technical discipline.

    • 7–10 years of experience in quality assurance in turbomachinery, marine, aerospace, or heavy fabrication sectors.

    • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes for high-speed rotating machinery and welded pressure systems.

    • Working knowledge of ISO 9001, AS9100, API, and defense/marine classification standards.

    • Certified Quality Auditor (CQA), ASQ certifications, or equivalent credentials preferred.

    • Proficient in reading engineering drawings, GD&T, and use of precision measuring instruments.

Preferred Skills:

    • Hands-on experience with turbine testing (hydrostatic, flow, vibration, run-in, balancing).

    • Familiarity with marine OEM platforms (e.g., GE LM2500, Siemens, Rolls-Royce, MAN Energy).

    • Working knowledge of ERP/MRP systems and quality modules (SAP QM, Oracle, etc.).

    • Lean Six Sigma or continuous improvement certifications.

    • Excellent documentation, communication, and team leadership skills.

Work Environment:

    • Work is split between office, shop floor, and testing areas.

    • Exposure to high-decibel test bays, rotating machinery, and inspection zones.

    • Use of PPE and adherence to safety protocols is mandatory.

    • Occasional travel to suppliers, shipyards, or OEM/fleet sites for inspections or audits.
