QA/QC Engineer – Weld Inspections and Surface Finish

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level QA/QC Engineer – Weld Inspections and Surface Finish is responsible for ensuring the quality and compliance of welded fabrications and surface finishes in mechanical equipment manufacturing. The role includes executing inspection plans, conducting visual and dimensional weld inspections, verifying surface finish quality, and ensuring conformance to industry codes and customer specifications.

This position is ideal for engineers with several years of experience in QA/QC roles in fabrication or equipment manufacturing environments, especially where hygienic or high-spec finish standards (e.g., 3-A, ASME, ISO) are required.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Weld Inspection and Compliance (Visual, Dimensional, Code-based)

  2. Surface Finish Validation and Sanitary Standard Compliance

  3. Non-Conformance Reporting and Root Cause Analysis

  4. Documentation, Traceability, and Quality Records

  5. Cross-Functional Collaboration and Vendor/Supplier Inspection

Key Responsibilities:

1. Weld Inspections and Testing

  • Conduct in-process and final visual weld inspections using AWS and ASME criteria.

  • Validate weld joint fit-ups, bead profiles, and dimensions against engineering drawings and WPSs (Welding Procedure Specifications).

  • Support or witness NDT (e.g., dye penetrant, radiographic, ultrasonic) with qualified inspectors when required.

2. Surface Finish Verification

  • Perform Ra surface roughness measurements and ensure compliance with sanitary finish standards (e.g., < 32 Ra or 3-A standards).

  • Inspect for polishing consistency, discoloration, and signs of weld contamination or burn.

  • Support validation of passivated or electropolished surfaces per specification.

3. QA/QC Documentation and Control

  • Generate inspection reports, weld logs, and surface finish documentation.

  • Maintain accurate records for traceability of materials, welders, and inspection results.

  • Assist in preparing final quality dossiers and turnover packages for clients.

4. Issue Resolution and Continuous Improvement

  • Identify, document, and assist in the resolution of quality issues through NCRs and CAPAs.

  • Participate in root cause analyses and corrective/preventive action reviews with production and engineering teams.

  • Suggest improvements in welding quality, surface treatment processes, or inspection procedures.

5. Vendor and Shop-Floor Interaction

  • Coordinate with internal and external fabrication teams to enforce quality requirements.

  • Participate in audits of suppliers and subcontractors for weld and surface finish quality.

  • Provide QA guidance and feedback during design reviews and pre-fabrication meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Welding Engineering, or related discipline.

  • 3–6 years of experience in a QA/QC role in metal fabrication, process equipment, or manufacturing.

  • Working knowledge of welding standards (e.g., ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, D1.6).

  • Experience with inspection tools such as weld gauges, Ra testers, borescopes, and calipers.

Preferred Certifications & Skills:

  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or ASNT NDT Level I/II (preferred but not required).

  • Familiarity with 3-A, BPE, or pharmaceutical-grade fabrication standards.

  • Ability to read engineering drawings, weld symbols, and process specifications.

  • Proficiency in documenting quality inspections and using QMS or ERP systems.
