The Senior Prototype Technician – Valvetrain leads the hands-on development, assembly, and refinement of prototype valvetrain systems and components for new engine or actuation concepts. This role requires deep knowledge of valvetrain mechanics, high-precision assembly skills, experience in interpreting engineering documentation, and collaboration with design and test teams to validate form, fit, and function. The technician plays a critical role in first-build validation, test readiness, and functional feedback.
Lead the build, inspection, and refinement of prototype valvetrain assemblies including camshafts, valves, rockers, followers, VVT units, and timing components.
Collaborate with design and R&D engineers to understand assembly challenges and suggest design improvements.
Perform advanced measurement and inspection using micrometers, bore gauges, 3-point internal gauges, surface finish testers, and CMM coordination when needed.
Carry out functional mock-ups, tolerance stack assessments, and dry-run builds to verify design feasibility and clearance integrity.
Document assembly procedures, non-conformities, and provide technical feedback to engineering teams during design validation phases.
Guide mid-level and junior technicians in prototype builds and safety practices.
Support preparation of test engines, rigs, or heads for durability and performance validation.
Coordinate with toolroom and machine shop to manage prototype modifications and tool adjustments.
Advanced Prototype Assembly:
Independently handle first-time and complex valvetrain prototype builds.
Ensure proper pre-assembly planning, critical fits, and dry-run validations before final test builds.
Design Feedback & DFM Insight:
Identify design-for-assembly issues during prototype builds.
Propose practical improvements based on real-world fitment and build experience.
Precision Measurement & Analysis:
Validate critical tolerances such as lash, lift, timing alignment, and axial/radial clearance.
Support root cause investigations for functional or dimensional failures.
Documentation & Technical Reporting:
Maintain build logs, part deviation records, and feedback reports to support iterative design cycles.
Assist engineering in developing build instructions for future manufacturing teams.
Mentorship & Workshop Leadership:
Train and mentor junior technicians, ensuring skill development and adherence to best practices.
Support continuous improvement initiatives and maintain a high standard of 5S and safety compliance.
Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical / Automobile Engineering, or ITI with extensive hands-on experience.
6–10+ years of experience in engine valvetrain prototype builds, mechanical assembly, or advanced R&D projects.
Expert knowledge of valvetrain systems (SOHC, DOHC, VVT, camless, electro-mechanical systems).
Strong skills in GD&T interpretation, precision assembly, and part troubleshooting.
Proficient in using mechanical metrology equipment and interpreting engineering drawings.
Basic understanding of engine testing requirements and assembly-to-test workflows.
Team-oriented, methodical, and self-driven with a passion for high-precision work.
