Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced and technically proficient Senior Prototype Fabrication Supervisor to lead the operations of a specialized prototype fabrication unit. This role requires deep knowledge of fabrication processes, strong leadership, and the ability to work closely with R&D, design, and quality teams to bring innovative product concepts to life. The ideal candidate will manage complex builds, rapid iteration cycles, and mentor junior team members to uphold high standards in prototype development.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Leadership & Supervision

  • Lead and manage the prototype fabrication shop, including a team of fabricators, welders, and technicians.

  • Allocate resources and prioritize multiple prototype builds in parallel with evolving project demands.

  • Set daily goals, monitor progress, and ensure on-time delivery of high-quality prototype parts.

2. Technical Oversight

  • Review and interpret detailed drawings, 3D models, GD&T, and welding requirements.

  • Resolve fabrication-related challenges, including complex fit-ups, tolerancing, assembly interference, and design-for-manufacturability issues.

  • Recommend modifications to improve design feasibility and reduce lead times.

3. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary liaison between R&D, design, testing, machining, and quality teams.

  • Provide real-time feedback on prototype manufacturability, cost considerations, and process capabilities.

  • Coordinate rework, updates, or multiple iteration builds based on test results and engineering feedback.

4. Quality & Documentation

  • Ensure all prototypes meet specified tolerances, functional requirements, and quality benchmarks.

  • Supervise dimensional inspections, weld quality, and material traceability documentation.

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., ISO, ASME) and prototype release protocols.

5. Process Improvement

  • Drive continuous improvement in prototype fabrication processes, tool selection, and fixture design.

  • Implement lean manufacturing and 5S principles to improve efficiency and reduce waste.

  • Introduce new materials, technologies, or methods to support advanced prototyping.

6. Training & Mentorship

  • Mentor junior supervisors, technicians, and apprentices on technical and safety practices.

  • Promote cross-training and skill development to enhance team flexibility and capability.

  • Conduct regular performance reviews and training sessions.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical / Fabrication / Manufacturing / Tool Engineering.

  • 8+ years of fabrication experience, with at least 3–5 years in prototype or low-volume production leadership.

  • Strong command of sheet metal fabrication, welding (TIG/MIG/Spot), assembly, and machining fundamentals.

  • Advanced proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings, tolerancing (GD&T), and BOMs.

  • Proven track record of managing multidisciplinary teams and delivering precision prototype builds.

  • Familiarity with ERP systems, project tracking tools, and quality documentation procedures.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Strategic Oversight of Complex Prototype Fabrication Projects

  • Design for Manufacturability and Engineering Collaboration

  • Multi-Skilled Team Leadership and Development

  • Quality Compliance and Documentation for R&D Builds

  • Process Innovation, Fixture Design, and Fabrication Efficiency

  • Safety, Shop Floor Discipline, and Cross-Functional Coordination

Work Environment:

  • Dynamic, innovation-driven workshop with exposure to sheet metal, welding, and light machining operations.

  • Fast-paced prototyping cycles requiring adaptability and hands-on technical problem-solving.

  • Compliance with strict safety protocols and use of PPE is mandatory.
