Pressure Vessel Engineer – ASME Section I and VIII

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Pressure Vessel Engineer serves as a technical authority for the design, analysis, code compliance, inspection, and lifecycle management of pressure vessels and related equipment in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Sections I and VIII. This role is critical for ensuring the mechanical integrity, safety, and regulatory compliance of pressure-retaining components across new construction, upgrades, and in-service equipment.

The engineer will lead multi-disciplinary projects, oversee code certification processes, interface with regulatory bodies, and mentor junior engineers. This position is ideal for a seasoned professional with deep expertise in pressure vessel engineering within energy, utility, chemical, or heavy industrial sectors.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Advanced Design and Analysis

  • Lead and review pressure vessel designs in compliance with ASME Section I (Power Boilers) and Section VIII Div. 1 and 2 (Unfired Pressure Vessels).

  • Conduct complex calculations involving internal/external pressure, nozzle reinforcement, fatigue, and thermal stresses using tools like PV Elite, Compress, and FEA software (ANSYS).

2. Code Interpretation and Compliance Leadership

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for ASME BPVC, NBIC, and regional pressure equipment codes.

  • Ensure all designs, modifications, and repairs meet applicable code requirements and jurisdictional regulations.

3. Project Oversight and Design Verification

  • Manage pressure vessel scope in capital projects, including specification, procurement, vendor review, and final acceptance.

  • Lead design reviews, failure mode assessments, and design optimization initiatives.

4. Fabrication and Certification Oversight

  • Oversee fabrication processes including material selection, weld procedure development, NDE planning, and pressure testing.

  • Coordinate with Authorized Inspectors (AI) for stamping and documentation per ASME and National Board requirements.

5. Asset Integrity and Fitness-for-Service

  • Lead inspections and integrity assessments of in-service vessels using tools such as API 579 / ASME FFS-1.

  • Provide recommendations for rerating, repair, or replacement based on corrosion, damage, or fatigue analysis.

6. Mentoring and Technical Leadership

  • Guide and mentor junior and mid-level engineers on vessel design, documentation, and code interpretation.

  • Conduct internal training on updates to ASME BPVC, design methodologies, and inspection technologies.

7. Regulatory and Client Interface

  • Prepare and present technical reports and documentation to internal stakeholders, clients, and regulatory bodies.

  • Support audits and third-party inspections as a company representative for pressure vessel compliance.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. ASME Code Authority (Section I & VIII)
Lead all aspects of compliance with ASME standards for new and existing pressure vessels and boiler systems.

  2. Pressure Vessel Integrity and Lifecycle Management
Ensure long-term mechanical integrity of critical equipment through robust inspection and evaluation strategies.

  3. Advanced Engineering and Simulation
Apply high-level analytical tools including FEA and fatigue assessments for critical equipment design and evaluation.

  4. Cross-Functional Project Leadership
Integrate mechanical engineering with procurement, quality assurance, construction, and operations.

  5. Standards Development and Best Practices
Develop internal standards, design templates, and review processes to ensure consistency and quality across projects.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (PE license or equivalent is preferred).

  • 10+ years of experience in pressure vessel and boiler design, analysis, and inspection.

  • Expertise in ASME Section I, VIII Div. 1 and 2, NBIC, and applicable API standards (e.g., API 579).

  • Proficiency with engineering tools: PV Elite, Compress, AutoPIPE, ANSYS, or equivalent.

  • Strong knowledge of materials, welding, fabrication processes, and NDE techniques.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and technical documentation skills.

  • Experience working with Authorized Inspection Agencies (AIA) and jurisdictional authorities.
